Toronto or GTA burners?

Post by klondike_bar » Fri Nov 28, 2008 11:11 am

Im a first time burner (or will be), and plan to drive down in a small station wagon.

Im lookin for local groups with information, as well as people who need a ride and are willing to chip for gas. (im estimating gas will cost 200-300 each way depending on prices and weight of stuff in car)

getting a few passengers will definitely take a huge chunk from my total costs....

haha....true.

unfortunately, that alone doesnt meet the ideal requirements.

you must be capable of playing GTA, and located in the Greater Toronto Area of ontario.

but if i ever need to pull a driveby, youll be at the top of my contacts list.

Im definitely still looking.

I dont want to guarentee anything specific yet, cuz i barely have a grasp on the situation as it is... :p

Unfortunately, my location and timing makes those bi-weekly drinkies almost impossible to join in on, so im yet to figure out what the burnon.ca community plans are for transport/camps/etc.

but yes, ive still got 2-3 empty seats and a sizable trunkspace. (the 3rd seat is dependant on trunk usage per person)

Klondike, I'm a bit west of you, and I know what GTA means. I love Toronto, it reminds me of a smaller Chicago, but more manageable and with a bit more international flair to it :D
Great subways and buses. Yonge St rocks, especially in the summer. I've taken ViaRail over there a number of times and it's always a great long weekend. As a matter of fact, me thinks I'm overdue for another trip there. Hmmmmm :)
Excuse me Ma'am, your going to feel a small prick.

GTA car-pool

Post by phat_empress » Fri Feb 27, 2009 12:30 pm

i live in the gta and want to carpool!

is this thread still active? are there other people who want to set up a carpool?

2009 will be my first burning man. i plan on attending the local GTA bi-weekly drink nights... as soon as i figure out *where* it is...

still active as long as people post in it

The carpool offer is still in the works, and may potentially involve "interviews". (dont want any lunatics on board, only crazies:P)

hopefully in the next month or 2 (hopefully less then more) ill be able to figure out what the best way to fit as many people comfortably, get to burning man enjoyably (possibility of semi-roadtrip exists if people are interested), and hoof it back as quickly as inhumanly possible. (staying for temple burn of course).

My biggest priorities are:

1) sharing fuel cost (biggie when going cross-country)
2) its a 34 hour drive according to Google. the trip home will ideally take less then 40 hours. Passengers capable/willing to contribute roadtime are appreciated.

whoever is interested, send me a PM and ill try to add your email.

AH! If you're still looking for people I totally want in! I'm in London but I could meet you in Toronto pretty easily, and I'd be happy to chip for gas and lots of snacks for the road!

Hamilton

Post by professorzed » Mon Mar 09, 2009 10:44 pm

Hello klondike bar,

I'm from Hamilton. It seems that phat_empress is from the Hamilton area as well, just like the late, great John Candy was. There must be something about being from Hamilton that makes you fat, or phat, or funny.

I'd be interested in looking for a way down there too. Last year, the Toronto burners all went in a big converted school bus called 'Lumpy'. Sadly, Lumpy is up for sale now so i'm not sure if she will be returning to the playa.

I'm hoping to bring an art project down, so I might have to rent a trailer as well. I suppose shipping is an option too.

THere seems to be a bunch of people who would be interested (maybe more than can fit in a station wagon), we should stay in touch and maybe get a second car going?

I've got one that could be driven down there but I am not too confident about this car's ability to drive all the way back after being subjected to playa conditions. It is kind of a piece of sh*t, you see. (one of those plastic saturns from 1991).

That is too bad about the bus, that sounds awesome!

i think it's advisable not to mention burning man at the border. it has a certain reputation that might get you detained and searched.

what are we doing? camping. the american southwest is so MAJESTIC.

Burners between borders

Post by professorzed » Thu Mar 12, 2009 12:26 am

Huh.

Well last year I went to Sturgis, South Dakota for the motorcycle rally there. I was planning on going to Burning Man from there, but didn't have enough money to make it. Shame though, it seemed right. There was about three weeks in between both events, which gave me enough time to travel between them & visit a friend and stay at his place for a week in Pocatello.

The advice given on the Burning Man site here says to give them a list of destinations you will be seeing:

So something like mentioning going to the motorcycle event in Sturgis, South Dakota, passing through famous cowboy town of WALL DRUG on the way, checking out Mount Rushmore, visiting Deadwood, checking out the graveyard where Calamity Jane is buried, heading through the Rockies to do some camping at Yellowstone National park, then meeting a friend for his birthday in Pocatello, Idaho, heading through Boise, Idaho and then maybe down to Reno (to hint at doing a little gambling) might satisfy their curiosity. There is another motorcycle event in Reno called 'Street vibrations' in September.

I'm not sure what you guys look like, but wearing 'biker gear' such as a Harley-Davidson shirt might help. A clean-cut biker of course. Motorcycles are optional.

Of course if pressed tell them 'Yeah, we'll probably go to Burning Man, too'.

This would also mean being gone for the whole month of August though, so I'm not sure how practical that would be for you guys.

probably not, i gotst'a make money this summer.

as long as we dont look to be carring drugs/weapons/explosives, and act as if we plan to thrw some good old canadian dollars around, it shouldnt be much of an issue.
