is it actually dust, or sand? cuz in toronto, dust is essentially all the little airbourne particles of crap that settle down after aout a week of floating around. (ie bite of kleenex particles, dead skin, etc)
That's actually a good question. It is way too fine to be sand and it coats you like baby powder. But it is just the fine particles of the dried up lake bed.

Only one year was the wind so strong that the dust actually hurt when it hit my skin.

Just like most other things on the playa, you really have to experience it to understand it.

Think of dirty drywall dust, a strong alkaline powder, as the wind blows the finest dust airborne the ground is scoured leaving larger partials and stones , when the wind gets really strong the heaver partials get picked up. Walking in a dust storm is like being in a heavy fog, it’s disorienting, there are no points of reference sounds are misleading,.. it’s a blast I love walking in it. Since the wind can come up at any time it is important to always have your goggles mask and water with you or be prepared to be really miserable or maybe die.

I'm an atheist, I odn't go anywhere.

Okay, somedays I'm an agnostic or a pagan. I think that means I just wander around in circles someplace.

Maybe when burners die they become dust ghosts and wander the playa and since ghost don't obey the laws of sequenciality they are our ghosts as well. Maybe those really nasty hits you get from a dust storm are actually our dead selves futily warning us of stupid mistakes to come.

Not sand, dust.

But not the kind of dust you're talking about either. It's playa dust, kinda like talcum powder.

Talk about too little too late! I've been making stupid mistakes my whole life!

Anyway, if I die, I refuse to go anywhere! I am staying right where I am (unless the weather is really nasty, in which case I'll temporarily go somewhere nicer.)

How come ghosts can walk through walls, but they don't fall through the ground? Seems like once they realized they could stick their head through a wall, they'd drop through the floor and oscillate back and forth from one side of the planet to the other for eternity. (it takes about 45 minutes each way, btw)

How much does a ghost weigh?

I don't know. Me too. Do they weigh more if they are in ghost clothes? And how come the clothes turn into ghosts? Would I have a little ghost drivers license in my ghost wallet if I died right now? Ghost hair gel? (yes, I am known to wear gel)

Acceleration due to gravity remains the same not matter the mass of the object. Doesn't matter what the ghost weighs. What would matter is how much resistance the immaterial ghost encounters and what it's terminal velocity is.

Wait. If the can pass through solid matter are they affected by gravity? Why don't they float off through the ceiling instead?
