Oh Horrors! What if they off-shored 911 operators?!
I've heard of this being done.

The hungry people with no jobs or food coming to take what they can from you any way they can.
And you figure that you will still have a job and/or food. :)
And what if a nun brings a schoolyard of hungry orphans, what do you do, open fire?

I really enjoyed the series 'Jericho' and was disappointed to see it cancelled.

For those of you that don't understand what we would be surviving, I recommend finding old airings on the internet. Granted, they exaggerated a bit to make their point. Nevertheless, some insight to be gained.

That was a really good series! (No wonder it didn't last... apparently television is not meant for people who like quality. )

Most likely I would try to teach them how to get water and offer some rice if I still have some. If they come to steal than yes a nun outfit would not protect a thief from being shot. Children would be the hardest targets in my opinion but one must be prepared for the worst while hoping for the best. To a certain extent it will be survival of the fittest, one cannot doom themselves just for the sake of trying for good karma. Trying to save the planets less fortunate is what got us in this pickle in the first place. If we were more concerned with our own than those overseas maybe we wouldn't have fallen so far down the food chain.

good points, TM, maybe we'll sit, shoot, and still eat, while UD starves with the "others"......

Darn! I was too slow!

Since I would be more of a danger to myself-- or practically anything other than what I was shooting at, I am taking the approach of building up a nice, thick layer of blubber to keep myself going until I can get some food growing and chickens going. (Or maybe I will just be someone's b*tch until things settle down... )

I am rather doubtful things will get to the state of complete chaos, but there are plenty of other good reasons to be ready to survive a catastrophe. (Floods, hurricanes, wildfires, etc.) I need to get off my backside and have some sort of emergency kit ready. Actually, I have plenty of camping supplies strewn about my apartment (seeing as how I learned that, even if my landlord cleared out the storage unit in the basement, the basement has a real water problem)-- so mostly what I need would be food that can last a long time without perishing.

Dougly, The answer depends on whether or not you have a job in an occupation that is going to disappear or not. It will depend on your debt exposure and the number of dependents you have.
There will probably be 2 million jobs lost by the end of the next quarter. As US wages gradually settle down to the global mean, most people will be a lot poorer.
I won't lose my job and you might not lose your's. But, I feel REALLY bad for the families that will be destroyed by poverty. I love kids more than anything. The child poverty rate is shooting up.
Survival means adapting to a new set of circumstances. For some people, that means stealing a shopping cart and living on dog food. We have it pretty easy here. I expect a billion people to die in the next 6 years.

The statistics I heard earlier today were that one out of every four children in the USA are now living at poverty level or below. This is worse than the one out of six during the Clinton era.

(I'd better get back to work now-- I'd like to keep my janitor job here at the university!)

Seriously that is sad, very sad!

On the other hand (not so seriously) I guess its not a good time to buy houses to turn?

Dan, I'm laying off the serious posts this place has turn into a bunch of fucking clowns until my next heavy metal poisoning or until I start doing drugs again like meth again I might start getting real serious.

Zeus, i understand. I take life seriously but not blogs. I've never complained about any posts on any thread that I started. All I can hope to do is to draw the attention of my fellow burners to situations that will affect their lives; http://www.silverbearcafe.com/private/12.08/famine.html
What others chose to do or post is entirely up to them. I believe in community and I believe in helping others.
The riots have already started in several countries. Zimbabwe is overrun with cholera. I expect GOV to open the haliburton camps by next fall. California is going to cut employment at least 30%. I expect that the camps will be the end of the line for those who are starving. They'll line up at the gates to survive. It's all going to be very sad.

So the response to being paid off is getting an assault rifle. Right. I'll be watching for you in the news, after I finish watering my vegetable garden. :)

That must be a later model M16. I don't recall the ones we were issued having a curved magazine.

I was USAF Security Specialist, a specialty within the Security Police field. We were issued the M16A1 version, which we carried daily on the job. On Okinawa, in '79, we carried with it 6 20rd clips, what was then considered to be a 2 day supply of ammo. When I returned stateside in 81 we were instead given 4 30rd clips. I can't remember if they were straight, or curved like the pic. Too much acid in Cal. I spose  We also carried the GAU5A, you other vets may be familiar with it, but for those that aren't it was basically a M16 receiver group, with a shortened/covered barrel and a re-tracting stock. Hmmm, let me see...
ok, here's a link to the 5A, it's shown below an M16 partway down the page:

http://www.ar15.com/lite/topic.html?b=3&f=123&t=246547

We used it for entry control work on the flightline. We also reg. trained with the M203 and M60. I went to S Korea for an exercise, they also utilized Mortars as well, just depended on what base you were at and the current threat level. I assume that now they have newer and improved toys to play with. :D

I grew up in that era and it always burned my britches to hear and see some of the negatives hurled at Nam vets who were lucky to make it home in one piece. I think maybe we have finally as a country learned our lessons (except those assholes at the westboro baptist church) and now realize that our military is under orders and just doing their job, and it is our job to support them, honor them, and thank them for their service, and sacrifices. Hurl epitaphs at our politicians if you will, but not our brothers and sisters in uniform.

Thank you guys.
Oh, and thank you Patriot Riders, where ever you may be.

In my job, I often transport elderly, and not so elderly gentleman :)
If it is a routine, non-emergent transport, I will often ask if they have served, and listen if they wish to talk. Sometimes they do not, and I can respect that. They have seen things that they will take to their grave with them. Sadly, in my job, I can relate to them. But if they want to talk, I am a captive audience. I enjoy their stories, and if it takes their mind off their current situation, good for that. I always thank them afterwards, and shake their hand. It is my honor. It is my duty.

Wow, I think I must have taken 2 of the orange pills today.

I carried a blooper (M203) in the National Guard, too. The leaf sights for the grenade launcher could be used to aim the rifle at night.

well,
we got a foot of snow last night, and, the power went out this morning.......
I'm operating on emergency generator and have been cooking on the wood stove...............
food in the pantry, candles and oil lamps.........we're set..........
Plowed all the neighbors places who don't have 4 wheel drive.........

Just thought I'd report on, as minor as it is, my satisfaction with being prepared for emergencies, natural disasters, and such...........

in keeping with the spirit of the thread, that is.......
