Hair dye question
Hair dye question
I have very short (1/2" or so) black hair with evenly dispursed white hairs. I'd like to dye just the white ones a bright color, leaving the black as it is or at least close to it. How can I make this happen? I've never dyed my hair before.

you can probably do highlights, but i think its super-tough to target only the white hairs.
however, try dyig your hair a bright colour anyways. if your dark hair is black or choclate brown, it may not even look different when dyed.
i tried dying my brown hair blond once, and at most i went a shade ligter on the colour scale. it was barely noticable

Manic panic!
any color!
It will only target your silver hairs...(lightly color your black hair, but wont be noticeable at all unless your in UV)
Typically speaking one must bleach all the color out for manic to work...but with black w/ silver highlights...should work supperb!
Warning:
Manic panic only coats the hair strand and will wash out a little more everytime you wash it...or warning...if you sweat...it might drip.
Also right out of shower make sure hair is dry before putting on clothing or it will transfere and stain! Use old towels too!

Sweat would be a problem - it's the middle of Summer and my walk home is 2 miles uphill. I might give it a shot - washing it a bunch of times would minimize this, wouldn't it?pinemom wrote: Warning:

experiment
I've seen this work. Friend of my wife's once added maroon to her black-with-silver hair and it showed up nicely.
I once tried super-dark blue (Remember how in superman comics his hair was so shiny black they highlighted it with blue? I wanted superman hair - the brown to go black and the white to go blue)
It wasn't a big success. Blue's not a good color for me is the main thing. Also, my base color is brown, not black, and the blue didn't really blend with the brown nor turn it black, it was just kind of dull blue. Also, my hair grows out fast so my roots were very obvious very quickly.
SHort answer - experiment, see what works. Manic Panic is supposed to be good and semi-temporary. There are other brands out there.
If you need to have a story (ie, work in a conservative environment or if it turns really bad) you can always say, "I had a bet with <s> that I'd dye my hair <any>"
WHen I had my blue hair, I had people coming up and saying, "Did you do that on a bet" or "Are you a coach or teacher who had a bet with his kids?" so I'm pretty confident you could sell that story if you had to.

I used Manic Panic for years and I didn't have problems with it running due to sweat except for first day or so. Yes, after a few washes that problem will go away. Recommend you don't use shampoo as often once you have it in though. Sometimes only use conditioner. It will make the dye stay in longer.
What color?
For the more unusual colors, I'm told there is a uk brand that is the only way to go.
I can't remember if it is special effects or something else.
Supposed to be better color and more reliable.
I strongly recommend brushing it on so you don't have a monochrome color.
I saw blue hair that actually looked natural due to this approach.
It looked much better.

Oh well, I had a good run.
I always thought "you're soaking in it" was a perfect way of saying "that's bullshit."

Sun bleaches out dye in playa~~~!!!
I bleached and dyed my hair dark
blue 2 years ago for BM and it went
to light blue to yellow wih
blue to old lady per color
pastel silver-bue!! The dye
and sun combo makes for
hard hair but not everyone
has issues.

Manic Panic or Special Effects dyes will both work really well for this. Leave the color in for as long as possible to make it last longer especially since you won't be bleaching out anything to make the hair shafts more absorbent. Unbleached hair isn't very porus so the dye has to be left in a looooong time to really take hold. Since there are no harsh chemicals in it it's even safe (and in this case recommended) to leave in overnight. Use Vaseline around on your skin your hairline and on your ears to avoid serious staining. Any color you use won't show on the black within a week, and in the meantime they will just add a twinge of color when the light hits just right. Blues, greens, and reds work particularly well on black/dark brown hair. And beware, for the first few showers, NO shampoo and only use a towel you don't care about staining.
I come by this info from years of trial and error on my own head, hope it helps.
Oh and to ChiefDanFox, Stagger On dude! I got a Hobo for ya!

Sounds dirty. Is this a cute but scary clown hobo, or the G.G. Allin (weenies and beans anyone?) performance art type hobo?[/quote]
More the scary trains and trash fires variety. Oh, and unwashed, I know you hate em' clean.

And I agree on that too. Manic Panic may be easier to find but Special Effects has more staying power and the color is much more intense. I also want to add the suggestion that you use a clarifying shampoo just before application to strip any buildup off your hair and make it as thirsty as possible.

If you have resistant hair Manic Panic will look nice for about 3 hours on the Playa. The most effective way to make temp color work is mega bleach your hair first. Leave the temp color in for hours, blowdry or heat it to encourage the color to stay. When you wash your hair, finish with half conditioner, half dye to pump up the color. In my opinion, it's just not worth it. Find a funky permanent color. Oh, and the fading of the temp colors is craptastic. For the cost of the temp, Manic or others, there's as much value in using food dye or kool-aid. At least you'd smell yummy.

I'll second special fx! I can only speak on behalf of the various pinks, but I've had much better color intensity + retention that with manic panic. Before I went all pink I would bleach sections platinum then overdye the whole thing which gave my dark brown hair a pinkish hue. I guess I'd stick with colors that match your coloring, my hair is (was?) naturally reddish toned so I doubt a blue or green would look good overdyed.
To preserve my pinky locks I only wash my hair 1x a week (blasphemy to many, I know, but I got there slowly and my hair stopped producing as much oil because I wasn't stressing out my scalp causing it to over produce oils..) and then I only wash the roots vigorously and just lightly run the suds over the rest of my hair. Not that the pictures is very large at all, but at the point the picture was taken my hair was 6 weeks post dying. I usually dye because of my roots, not because of loss of color. Now, for burning man, everything is thrown out the window. I went nearly blonde out there last year! My strategy this year is to keep it covered for the brightest parts of the day and especially when it's wicked windy or dust stormy.

Depending on what color you're going for, and what kind of gray you have, you might have to do different things. If you've got gray that's kind of dirty blondeish, or slightly colored, your results would be different if your gray hairs were platinum white. It's hard to say without seeing a picture of your hair.
...Just post a picture of your hair! It'll be easier to give suggestions then. Either way, Special Effects is the best ever. I agree with everyone else, it's far superior to Manic Panic, in vibrancy and how long it stays in the hair. Their turquoise is my favorite.
