Elliot, at out Decomp I had a Paint my Sails set-up, invited people to let their creative juices flow. You need some color on that bus of yours, maybe you should let burners paint it for you at the next burn.

Thinking about bringing another sail to the burn myself.

Goood un!
An explanation is in order for our virgins: In 2007 we had a rain shower that resulted in the most spectacular double rainbow. Lots of photos of it in the BM image gallery.
Yes, I'm interested in turning people loose on my bus -- within the themes of Burning Man and Kinetic Sculpture Racing. Meanwhile, I have a friend in Port Townsend (very close to Arinda!) who may be doing a KSR mural or two on it in July. So many ideas; never enough time and money.

As the ePlaya resident Sage of School Buses, Self Appointed, I hereby grant you a Franchise to paint Copies of Rainbows on your Blue Bus. Ken Kesey, wherever he is, would understand. Sigmund Freud would understand....defiantly...
Thats pretty sweet what you are going to do to your bus.
is it going to just be what you dive to BRC and then keep your stuff in in & sleep in it...(if you do much sleeping at Burning man) or are you going to make put a bunch of stuff on it and make it into an art car while you are there?
Im also from WA.
i have been to two burns so far.2007 & 2008
i cant wait to be back at home in BRC.
soooon. :]

well ... i would LOVE to help paint a bus! what a fun project .... sails, too ... i'll paint flowers on just about anything..... or rainbows ... or people .... or, whatever the owner wants ...
but i am a silly virgin, who doesn't know anything ... how hard would it be to get a bus painted at burning man? what kind of paint do you use? i would definitely be into it, if i knew where to go ... i could even bring my own brushes, i plan to anyhow ....

You'd want to be super sure that nothing ended up on the playa, and you'd be depending on strangers to do the right thing. As for kind of paint, figure out what works on vehicles. Then find the one with the best clean-up.

Arinda, since your bus already has a coat of paint over the original yellow, I suggest you ask some local knowledgeable folks to advise you about paint preparation. What you are concerned about is getting the new paint to stick. At the minimum, you will want to sand all the blue.
And I suggest you make the roof white, to ward off heat. There is also an additive you can add to the roof paint, which helps reflect heat. One brand is HyTech.
I used Ace Hardware Rust Stop on my first bus, and plan to use it on this one. This is the same type of paint as Rustoleum; just costs a tad less. Most of the folks on the skoolie forum report using this type of paint. It is an oil-based paint, so cleanup can only be done with a solvent.
If you plan to paint in Black Rock City, there are a couple of concerns. Fishy already mentioned cleanup, and in this regard, I would suggest large drop cloths and something to hold them down with. As for the paint itself, you would want a water-based (latex) paint, so you can wash it off with water. Ask for something suitable for this purpose, which would probably not be house paint. And it should be something that dries quickly, to minimize dust in the paint.
As for getting a favorable result from a volunteer artist.... Well, where is your sense of adventure?! LOL
I suggest bringing some large sheets of paper or other surfaces for the prospective artist to demonstrate the proposed art on a smaller scale.
Then there is the dust. For painting in BRC, you would want to wait until the wind is calm, then quickly wash and dry a section of the bus immediately before painting. I'm notorious for not noticing the weather, but I seem to remember that mornings are usually the calmest.
Even if you get a lot of dust in the paint, you may be able to sand that off later, so long as the art is not painted too thin.
As for my own bus, I do plan to bring drop cloths and paints and brushes, in case somebody wants to have a go.
