an all-year-round burning-man/fesvial -esque environment...
what are your thoughts on the creation of an environment which resembles burning man or music festivals but runs all year round, or half a year, or whatever....
obviously it would be really cool, and a great benefit to society.
as far as feasibility, would it work economically?
it would be amazing to see this happen, and i personally would be willing to devote myself to creating such a thing if i thought i could help make it happen!

2009 will be my 1st year but from what I can tell there is a HUGE amount of defaultia capital that gets pumped into Burning Man. Seems like people work really hard for a whole year just to make one week of utopia.

LOL Well if I'm at BM all year when will I find the time to work to afford to go to BM? This post sort of reminds me of the two kids thinking about getting married without ever thinking of all the things necessary to make it work--so they just get together and live on love for the first nine months, then after that they eat the baby.

When I was a kid I used to pray every night for a new bicycle.
Then I realized that the Lord doesn't work that way so I stole one and asked Him to forgive me

One can already do that by attending the various regional events - think 'Endless Summer'. It's a nice little fantasy I've been entertaining for a few years now.csrpj wrote:what are your thoughts on the creation of an environment which resembles burning man or music festivals but runs all year round, or half a year, or whatever....
How one would pay for it is another thing entirely.
It's better to be Lucky!

Well, I was thinking of a science fiction/fantasy type story in which an event like BM gets into a situation where it has to become a real society. The logical way for it to go would be to become a barter based economy, rather than gift based. Eventually there would have to be a real law enforcement agency (which would have to be paid for, somehow), and judicial system (which would also have to be paid for). Eventually, it would look like something very different than the festival.
A "Defaultia" type place which already exists, could be one of those communities (such as Slab City, California), where people go to drop-out of mainstream America. They aren't Burning Man, but they are probably as close as you will come in the Real World(tm).

The first statement is debatable, the second is so unproven as to be...csrpj wrote:obviously it would be really cool, and a great benefit to society.
Yeah, unicorns shitting jellybeans.
Those flavors in some of the jellybeans are so nasty that when the factory accidentally dumped some the were fined by the epa. Just thought I'd throw that in there.

Burning Man barely works for a single week. Just look at the evolution of the event over the years - it changed from near anarchy to a nice orderly little city with most of the things a normal city has. The norms are simply a little different and people put up with more bs because it's only a week and they're trying to have fun. Even still, there's much drama.
I say just keep whatever trappings of BM you like that are compatible with the rest of your life and leave it at that. If you want to drop out of society for a while there's nothing stopping you other than finances. You don't necessarily have to do it as part of a big organized group.

agreed. i hate winter. a few snowballs, half a dozen toboggan runs, a day of snowboarding, and a few hours on a snowmobile, then i spend the next 3 months waiting for spring...Sail Man wrote:Well, I don't know about living in a burning man world year round, but I shure could use some of the playa warmth bout now

I'm hip! On top of all the snow we got, now it's fucking raining!! Ahhhh
Sitting here at work, so far so good. Nobody od'ing on eggnog. Yesterday was crazy, busy and more snow on top of snow. Never ceases to amaze me how many people who grew up here forget about how to drive in the winter. Oh well, at least we have job security

There's a porn convention in Las Vegas this January. Will that be close enough?

Naw, can't afford to go to Vegas!
It's only the end of December and I am already sick of winter. We're getting the same weather here as SailMan is-- just a little sooner. At least I had yesterday and today off from work, and my car's exhaust is finally repaired, so I can keep the windows up. (I'd been driving around with the windows down with the temp.s in the low single digits and colder... anyone want to guess why I am sick of winter?!? In addition, at work I also get to clear sidewalks and such of the d---ed snow!)
BRC, or at least somewhere warm, had a great appeal at the moment!
