Tragic events this year are making a soul-cleansing pilgrimage to BRC this year a better and better idea.

I am trying to come up with some ways to participate - be it through my own theme camp, or art installation, or by joining someone else's gig.

Still mulling over ideas.

It's my understanding that the playa becomes a lake during the winter. Is that weather dependant, kinda like our lakes freezing here in Michigan? How deep does it get? Does it get cold enough that it actually freezes?

I've been out there in December, you could see the dark that may have been water, but the playa was too mushy to risk driving out to find out for sure. We drove in a few hundred yards and stopped, the ground felt spongy, springy as we walked. We had Larry's folks with us so decided that getting stuck was a Bad Idea. It was cold, and the wind was biting. Made me glad I was wearing leather.

It gets cold enough to freeze, but I don't know if it actually makes a sheet of ice. It would only be inches? I'm only familiar with the salt flats in Utah and those don't freeze, too salty?

It had been yrs since I've drove 80 out west, and driving west of salt lake past the salt flats we started seeing all the words, pictures etc that people have created with the rocks in the salt. It was really cool and I was bummed I was driving since I couldn't pay them as much attention as did my passenger. What was really cool though was seeing 1 picture that was "the man"

and it made us really geeked knowing we were getting closer to BRC.

If you take a gander at the "Street View" on Google Earth along Jungo Road, there are patches of ice in some of the road side water. I don't know if that tells us doodly-sasquatch...

I really hope the playa is flooded. This past winter, things were so dry that the playa didn't have a chance to reconstitute itself. That's why the surface was so loose and dusty. My art car was great in the dunes this year, but I almost dumped passengers off the top going over some of the larger hills. 2 inches of water this winter will be perfect for making that nice smooth, crackly surface that we all know and love. This past year, bikes were basically useless once you got beyond the esplanade. I just love going to the deep playa early in the week and finding large areas that were not driven yet. I just want to strip off all my clothes and roll around naked on it. I might just do that this year.

Didn't really get much from the last little storms except fucking wind and cold.

I have seen heavier frost.
