At Last

Post by fatal_GRACE » Fri Dec 19, 2008 10:26 am

I have been interested in Burningman for a few years now, but, living in Alaska, I never had the time or means to make the long trip. Fortunately, I moved down south a couple months ago, and I finally have an opportunity to make it happen.

So, greetings to you all, and I look forward to meeting you on the playa this year.

Hey there, welcome to eplaya!

Could you see Russia from your house too when you lived there?

Only if I used binoculars, heh.

Anyways, I've been reading the survival guide and the first timer's reading, but I was wondering if there were other useful texts or tips to take a look at.

Welcome Fatal Grace. I also found Phil's website to be very helpful when I was preparing:

Theres wuite a group of Alaskans tha go - some make the exodus by road as well. If your looking to do it on the cheap - PM me nd ill put you in touch with the more involved anchorage based folks. They do it in three weeks, with some driving, some cooking, and all having a good time.

One of the busses has a shitter, shower, kitchenette and seats 24 to boot. They stop for fuel and to dump poo - MEals are cooked enroute, and plenty of drivers to keep going.

sounds like a blast.

Thanks for all the useful links and advice, guys, it helps to get a better understanding of the challenges involved.

The Alaskan group sounds like a blast, mdmf, but I moved out of state, so I won't be starting out from there. Still, I'd be interested to get in touch with them.

Also, I've been looking at shelter options (I'm thinking about going with a commercial tent, since I have no experience making my own), I was wondering what is recommended. I found one site called shelter-systems.com that looks good - are there any reviews or tips I can get on that?

Some people use their stuff.

Some use tents inside larger tents or shade structures.
A four season tent is best, in other words, a proper tent that closes up.
Springbar is highly recommended, but heavy.

These people do shade kits.
