3D Zoetrope Strobing

I know many of us look back with fond memories on the swimmers, divers and monkeys- those magical three dimensional zoetropes that flickered in the night.

Inspired by that work, I've an idea for a smaller, in-camp zoetrope. I'm looking for links or ideas on how to get the timing of the strobe right. I've considered the prospect of using brush contacts over strips of conductive tape, but I'm not sure how that'll hold up in the dust.

I felt sure the eplaya could, if not point me in the right direction, at least point me in the direction of someone else who can.

How about using a micro-switch with a roller on the end of the arm. Mount the switch on the structure that is on the ground and does not rotate.
A ramp put on the underside of the turntable would activate the switch as the ramp went over it. Does that make sense?

If you can't use an original type with shutters, use an adjustable speed strobe.

In Vessa, the festival of light, there are very complex rotary switching displays done with conductive paths and leaf contacts.
Some of the displays look like sophisticated modern signs, with very complicated patterns and stepping.
