I've made similar repairs...oughtta work, especially if you makes the holes. Remember to allow extra time for the GOOP to cure inside, where the airflow is reduced.

I found an old camp hatchet with the handle next to it..

Years of abuse had loosened the wood and aloud it to shatter under the head..

After cleaning up the handle, I forced GOOP into all the cracks and splits.. then run the wedge slit through the table saw to clean it up.. A new wedge and it is back to it's old self..

To give it the used look, I run the top of the handle over the bench grinder..

Then reshaped the cutting edge and sharpened it..

The back of the head was flattened some from useing it for a hammer..The edges of this can break off in use and send you to the ER for stiches or more..

I always round the edges on all hammers, wedges and chiesls.. better safe thannnnn

10 min job at the work bench..

yeah GOOP

Post by robotland » Wed Apr 16, 2008 5:30 am

Huzzah! My "art with alternative materials" class at the Art Institute is a go...Tonight as part of my sermon I will introduce the flock to the wonders of GOOP, and I'll share the text of my How To GOOP handout once I've completed it. Any brilliant observations to include?

Just discovered a new GOOP technique! I made an enclosure for part of Mister Jellyfish's project (please go to "Zsu-Zsu link under Art Projects) and needed to make lettering with some volume to it...I drew out the letters with GOOP and then buried them under a pile of aluminum dust from my studio bandsaw. The results are very satisfying, although NOT as twinkly as if I'd used glitter or even tiny glass beads. (It got painted with flourescent paints anyway.) I observed that the GOOP seemed to take a little longer to cure with the surface covered, thus reducing airflow.

Good Grief! I let this thread slip all the way back to Page Five!

I was just working on my latest brilliant invention, the DETAILS CENSORED BY GREENKILTS Q DIVISION, and was noticing that the GOOP was curing REALLY slowly...I had to glue a long aluminum tube inside of an old thermos bottle, so the airspace and circulation were limited. Placing a little battery-powered fan on top and leaving it alone for a couple of hours made a HUGE difference. I had known that air and heat played roles in the curing of GOOP, but had underestimated the importance of airflow. Now a little fan is a part of my GOOP workbench!

So, robotland. I am gifting patches this year. Is carrying a tube of goop so that I can afix said patches to hats or jackets in real time cleaver, or would I just be exposing the ravers to more chemical fumes?

Crypto:
I like Beacon's Fabric Tac or 3-in1 Fabric glue for patches
clear, VERY quick drying (Store in double zip lock on playa)
Very good for trim on costumes too
but GOOP would be good -takes longer to dry though

Goop saved the leaky Nalgene bladder from my hydration pack last year.
And REI rplaced it w/o charge when I returned it to them....

Everybody should bring GOOP!

Works GREAT, but takes time as Stormfeather notes...My "Kalamazoo Art" hat patches have been through several machine washings without any loosening. Maybe bring a scraper to spread thin layers on both patch and "target" and then bring together. BARGE cement also works quite well....(MUTINY!!!!!)

I made the mistake of moving to a new country without first verifying that Goop was available here. It's nowhere to be found and nothing I tried from hardware stores compared. I nearly broke down and paid $28 shipping to get some delivered from the states before I discovered it IS sold in a few specialty craft stores labeled as E6000. I picked up a tube (for the equivalent of $11 US, not cheap!) and it appears to be the same old Goop with a different label. Made in US by Eclectic Products Inc.

Thank god! I don't have to move back to the US after all!

Eclectic products is it.
I recognize that name.
I'm guessing they don't carry the whole variety though.
Maybe you should start muling goop in the area and teaching people how to use it?

Is there any actual variety of formulations or is it just a variety of labels? No variety here - just E6000, which as far as I can tell is only being sold to dollmaking enthusiasts. At some point Shoe Goo II was available but I asked around and it's nowhere to be found. One shoe repair guy thought it was about to be banned because kids were buying it to use to get high. So uh yeah hauling a huge case of it through customs might look a bit suspicious :)

Maybe we can just stuff a Pinata full of it and send that to you. Why, that wouldn't look the least bit suspicious if x-rayed :D

They claim there are differences.
At least you can get shoe goo in clear.

They have probably added that volatile to it to make it unpleasant to smell.
Like you can't get acetone or petrol there anyway...

I recently carried a tube of GOOP through US customs to and from Jamaica (where I was researching GOOP applications under equatorial conditions) without hassle. Sadly, my research time was curtailed drastically by my lack of motivation after performing lengthy Seawater Immersion Tests and Red Stripe Ingestion Trials.
While investigating some materials at Michaels ("The WalMart of crafts") I noticed that they were selling "Craft GOOP" for $6.49 RIGHT NEXT to "Household GOOP" for about four bucks...If they're going to write "STUPID" on my forehead, I wish they'd at least write it BACKWARDS so I can read it in the mirror!

I don't use GOOP anymore because E6000 is far superior than most GOOP varieties.

I have used over 60 tubes of it now, without anything failing, had several failures using goop, it just doesn't hold up as well.

The marine GOOP seems to be about as good but why pay extra for a name....

BTW, remember Waterboy's Scuba suit ?......E6000 !!!

If I'm not mistaken, E6000 is made by the same company
that makes GOOP

Kinetic racers use E6000 to glue strips of tire rubber to metal wheels, then ride miles and miles on them -- and it stays together. Very good stuff. Buy in caulking gun tubes at industrial rubber stores.

I don't even smell it anymore....I passed a tube around for my Found Art 400 students to sniff as I was no longer objective about it. I don't really register Krylon, either.

I was just thinking of you, my dear Jelly...I was watching a movie called "The Darwin Awards" that had a scene supposedly shot in Wendover but that featured a beloved Reno landmark- Twin City Surplus! According to the movie, Jamie and Adam from "Mythbusters" work there. Also according to the movie, Wendover has TREES, but no MOUNTAINS. Hmmmmm...
