Reporting from Jerusalem -- After four days of airstrikes that have partially crippled Hamas, Israel signaled interest today in a proposed 48-hour suspension of its offensive in the Gaza Strip to test the prospects for a full cease-fire with the militant Palestinian group.

The proposal, offered by France on behalf of the European Union, came as Israel's air force appeared to be running short of bombing targets and losing the advantage of surprise it achieved early in the offensive that began Saturday.
Israeli aircraft attacked the coastal enclave throughout the day, pounding supply tunnels under Gaza's border with Egypt, an empty Hamas government complex, several security installations and the home of a senior Hamas commander. The bombing also killed more unarmed civilians, including two sisters, ages 4 and 11, who were walking near a rocket-launching site.

Hamas fired more than 40 rockets at Israeli communities near Gaza's border, striking deeper than ever into the Jewish state but causing only light casualties. One rocket landed 28 miles from Gaza in the desert city of Beersheba, a range that makes 700,000 Israelis, a tenth of the country's population, potential targets.

More than 370 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza since Saturday, and the United Nations says at least 62 of them were noncombatant women and children. At least four Israeli civilians have been killed by attacks from Gaza during the same period, officials said.

Israeli officials say the airstrikes have destroyed one-third of Hamas' estimated arsenal of 3,000 rockets and half of its underground launch silos -- "an overwhelming blow, albeit far from critical," said Yair Naveh, a former commander of Israeli forces in the West Bank.

He said the offensive, aimed at breaking Hamas' capacity and will to continue the rocket attacks, was nearing a decisive point: Israeli leaders must either escalate the fight with a ground invasion of Gaza or arrange a cease-fire.

Israeli officials said they were weighing both courses of action. But the desire for a truce appeared to dominate a series of high-level meetings today in Jerusalem, prodded by France's initiative and by an indirect show of interest from Hamas.

The idea of a truce was floated Sunday by Khaled Meshaal, Hamas' top political leader, based in Syria, in a telephone call to Senegalese President Abdoullaye Wade, who heads the Organization of the Islamic Conference.

Senegal's Foreign Ministry announced that Hamas was interested in a cease-fire if it included a lifting of Israel's blockade of Gaza, which has severely restricted the flow of goods across the border.

France, which holds the rotating presidency of the European Union until Thursday, took up the idea and proposed a 48-hour truce. Israel would halt its attacks and lift the blockade to let in humanitarian relief supplies, testing Hamas' willingness to stop the rockets. If calm prevailed for 48 hours, talks on a long-range cease-fire would begin.

French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner twice telephoned Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak today to discuss the proposal. Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni was to meet in Paris on Thursday with French President Nicolas Sarkozy, his office announced.

Israeli government spokesman Mark Regev said Israel was wary of any proposal "that would give Hamas a respite allowing it to regroup and rearm."

But two Cabinet-level officials confirmed Israel's interest in a cease-fire.

"It could be that we would say, 'OK, all right, for humanitarian needs only,' and we would allow this," Welfare Minister Isaac Herzog told Israel's Army Radio. "But of course this also depends on the other side, where it wants to take this confrontation."

He said Israel could continue to prepare for a ground offensive in Gaza as it tested a cease-fire.

I've never seen him post anything to resolve the issues except if it meant to destroy Israel and every jew.

"Can't we all just get along" was only meant for Eplaya and not get his ass kick off the board. It wasn't meant to resolve the Middle East Crisis and patch up his incessant attacts against every Jewish Eplayan and forum.

Anyway Hamas is going to hurt so bad! The plan is to weaken them so that the Palestian Authority can come bad in and clean them out. Even the Arab League wants them out of the picture for good.

Imagine no rockets were fired into Jeruselem and Israel just decided to attack.

Gaza victims' burns increase concern over phosphorus

Photographic evidence has emerged that proves that Israel has been using controversial white phosphorus shells during its offensive in Gaza, despite official denials by the Israel Defence Forces.

There is also evidence that the rounds have injured Palestinian civilians, causing severe burns. The use of white phosphorus against civilians is prohibited under international law.

The Times has identified stockpiles of white phosphorus (WP) shells from high-resolution images taken of Israel Defence Forces (IDF) artillery units on the Israeli-Gaza border this week. The pale blue 155mm rounds are clearly marked with the designation M825A1, an American-made WP munition. The shell is an improved version with a more limited dispersion of the phosphorus, which ignites on contact with oxygen, and is being used by the Israeli gunners to create a smoke screen on the ground.

The rounds, which explode into a shower of burning white streaks, were first identified by The Times at the weekend when they were fired over Gaza at the start of Israel's ground offensive. Artillery experts said that the Israeli troops would be in trouble if they were banned from using WP because it is the simplest way of creating smoke to protect them from enemy fire.

There were indications last night that Palestinian civilians have been injured by the bombs, which burn intensely. Hassan Khalass, a doctor at al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City, told The Times that he had been dealing with patients who he suspected had been burnt by white phosphorus. Muhammad Azayzeh, 28, an emergency medical technician in the city, said: â€œThe burns are very unusual. They don't look like burns we have normally seen. They are third-level burns that we can't seem to control.â€

For some non-playa reasons I have some Israeli connections, all of whom are associated with the peace movement in Israel. All of the native-born ones have been in the Israeli army, and to a person they are brave and passionate about peace.

I believe that I would feel the same about Palestinians who work for peace. In fact, the Israelis I know best are working with Palestinians for peace, and both sides are working against long odds for mutual respect.

In my opinion the war goes on because a sufficient number on both sides cannot let go of fear and revenge. Further, other countries in the world, especially the U.S., have contributed to the deadly embrace for political or economic reasons.

This conflict is a global problem, fed by centuries of distrust and violence. War crimes have been committed by nearly every major group involved. To lay all of it at the foot of the Israelis, or even the Israeli government, is to neglect the history of the region and the contending peoples.

None of the above should excuse the current round of mayhem for either side. I do think that the current Israeli action in Gaza is brutal and unwarranted, but it has a rich set of precedents. Arguing about who fired first this time is pointless.

I would agree with you dr.placebo but the fact is, Israel has been escalating, exasperating and instigating this situation. They bomb first, wait for retaliation and then use that as an excuse to create inexcusable atrocities and then lie and twist the story around.
I do not care for people like this. I have dealt with them all my life and the best solution I have found that works is to call them on it A.S.A.P..

The more you call them on it quickly, the sooner you see them disappear.

It really is time to stand up to bullies.

There is no need for them in this world.

I say do whatever it takes.

Israel has more than several decades long history of lying like this and getting away with it.

Yep, but this will leave their people and culture extinct in about 50 years if the world lives that long from the result of Israels actions. Israel is breeding new extremists in huge numbers since this new incident everyday.
