Permission to Burn
Permission to Burn
So I've decided that going to Burning Man this year would be amazing, along with a few friends. However, I still live with my parents, and while I will be 17 and my friends 17 and 18, but my parents are still skeptical, so I need to find a way to convince them.
I figured my best bet would be to do an art project, and call it my culminating project. The culminating project is a graduation requirement for kids in washington, and all it really means is I've got to come up with some project involving 40 hours of work to somehow use something I've learned in high school to better the community. The freedom for this project is amazing, as kids have done things such as climbing Mt. Ranier, building longboard skateboards, fixing up old cars, and swimming long distances.
Now if swimming long distances and building skateboards better the community and utilize knowledge from high school, how could particitpating in burning man not be acceptable? I figure if I could get my plan to participate in Burning Man approved by the school, I'd be pretty much set to go.
But here's the state site explaining the culminating project
http://www.sbe.wa.gov/gradreq/culproj/default.htm
Thoughts? Ideas? Help? Thanks!

Well that's certainly a new and unique angle to work for the folks permission! LOL
Will you be 18 at the time of the burn? I believe you either need to be 18 or be with your guardian. (Certainly I don't think you'd be the first to get around that rule.)
Anyway, best of luck!!

Yes, I am in the same position as Phantom, except I have to convince my wife to let me go. I tried the book report project and even have done chores around the house, but still she is not convinced that I should go. So, I buy my ticket and book the flight and just go anyway and listen to her bitch and moan for weeks afterwards. It's fun avoiding her and she knows the routine already.
Just buy the ticket and go and stop thinkning about it!

I think if you can come up with a design for an ambitious art project and show that you're capable of finishing it the project judges and your parents will fall in line. I'd include some aspect they can feel good about, such as using recycled materials, making a statement about a cause, or somehow relating it to pride in where you come from. Seek help from people at your school (auto shop, wood shop, and art teachers can be especially helpful) and from friends.
It will not be in any way easy, but will be a great thing. You'll learn new skills and have something really cool to put on your resume.
Look through the funded art lists from various years to get an idea of what the proposals should look like and what sort of projects people have attempted in the past. Here's one year's examples:

Re: Permission to Burn
There is no way you could prove that Burning Man does anyone more good than ill, but then teachers are so amazingly gullible you could write up the entire report now and just photoshop yourself into the event in the fall.Phantom wrote:...Now if swimming long distances and building skateboards better the community and utilize knowledge from high school, how could particitpating in burning man not be acceptable?...
I agree with looking at art proposals, as well as Larry Harvey's speeches about it all.

Greetings Phantom, swimming eh? How about an art project that has objects "swimming" in the wind? Nothing with chimes mind you, your liable to find those shoved up your nostrils
You could build a geometric climbing sculpture. Peeps could plant a flag from their home state atop it.
Or you could just take those 2 hotties your bringing for Simon and draw designs on their naked body with suntan lotion and then let them hit the sun.

Excuse me Ma'am, your going to feel a small prick.

Out together some arcane type of survey and survey a thousand folks at BM. ( or leave them in the center camp with a couple of return boxes and a plea to fill out)
There are pleny of places online to enter data for free as a demo for surveys or create a database.
Wouldnt cost more than the printing and the time to enter data. Drop a PM and ill give you some sites for database creation to compile data and a format for a finished survey. You could analyze a certain aspect of BM and make a statistics project out of it.

Only not sex. We've all filled out so many of those surveys that we regularly lie on them. So you'd get no valid answers.
Do it about machinery or pet sitting or tent longevity or anything but sex.

must be quantifiable though. hard as hell to interpret written answers into a survey.
Yes / No 1-10, A,B,C,D... answers only.

Man, I wish I'd thought of something like that when I was in grad school for my MBA. I could have done a paper on living in a gifting economic model with no marketing or capitalism. I doubt the data would have been particularly useful however.
Capital investiment = significant
Return on invest = $0 (there is no value placed on happiness by the man)
And yet, I can't wait to get there!

Phantom:
Bring whoever is more fun...mom or dad.
Have them pack lots of water and some food.
Upon arrival point out three things that might interest him/her.
Help set up camp or hook them up with an interesting theme camp.
Leave immediately and plan to rendezvous back at camp on Monday.
Drop by occasionally to leave notes that you are still alive.
Easy.

cheers to that, assuming that you can keep finding food and paces to crash. Just make sure not to return when your dads in a drug-addles-sex-orgy back at the tentOnceTheDustClears wrote:Phantom:

Me and my spouse got in at 06 at the supple young age of 16 and 17, traveling from northern Canada. We would not be the adults we are today if not for the warm welcoming arms of all the burners who see the humanity past the age limit.
Just like all those...don't climb signs- token gesture disclaimers to keep away the anal ones always makes me smile.
What was it that they said there...safety third. :)
Wishing you the smoothest of sailing in the efforts of your ingenious plan.
I got a question put on our Anthropology mid-term about the burn from raising the right discussion about it in class, so just plan your approach well- truth and reason run deep out there.
