Dine like Obama

Post by Oldguy » Fri Jan 09, 2009 10:55 pm

You too can share a meal just like the President on Inauguration Day.

A brace of American birds" will be among the courses served to the new president, vice president and about 200 guests on Inauguration Day at the traditional Inaugural Luncheon in the Capitol.

According to the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies, the menu has:

"Been designed to reflect the theme of the 2009 Inaugural ceremonies, 'A New Birth of Freedom,' which celebrates the bicentennial of the birth of President Abraham Lincoln.

"The menu, created by Design Cuisine, a catering company based in Arlington, Virginia, draws on historic ties to the presidency of Abraham Lincoln. Growing up in the frontier regions of Kentucky and Indiana, the sixteenth President favored simple foods including root vegetables and wild game. As his tastes matured, he became fond of stewed and scalloped oysters. For dessert or a snack, nothing pleased him more than a fresh apple or an apple cake."

So, what's being served?

First Course: Seafood Stew. The wine: Duckhorn Vineyards, 2007 Sauvignon Blanc from the Napa Valley in California.

Second Course: A Brace of American Birds (pheasant and duck), served with sour cherry chutney and molasses sweet potatoes. The wine: Goldeneye, 2005 Pinot Noir from the Anderson Valley in California.

Third Course: Apple cinnamon sponge cake and sweet cream glacé. The wine: Korbel Natural 'Special Inaugural Cuvée,' from California.

Lincoln is center stage in other ways as well on Inauguration Day. At the swearing-in, Obama will place his hand on the "Lincoln Bible," which the 16th president used at his 1861 inauguration.

Barack Obama family visits Lincoln Memorial
By CHRISTINE SIMMONS • Associated Press Writer • January 10, 2009

WASHINGTON (AP) — President-elect Barack Obama made an impromptu visit Saturday night with his family to see the Lincoln Memorial, paying tribute to a former president he frequently invokes as an inspiration.

Obama arrived in his motorcade shortly after 7 p.m. He stepped out with his wife Michelle and daughters Malia and Sasha and walked up the steps into the memorial.
After visiting the memorial for about 20 minutes, Obama and his family walked out, facing the reflective pool and Washington Monument. He waved to some passersby standing around the memorial’s lower steps.
Obama frequently invokes the memory of Lincoln. He announced he was running for president in Springfield, Ill, at the steps of the Old Capitol, where Lincoln was a legislator.
