Responding locks out a person's ability to delete a post

Post by dirty bird » Mon Mar 29, 2004 11:20 am

Good idea! Since you thought of it, and are obviously familiar with the rules here are some ideas for the article:

If you find someone who does not post so much breaking a rule, try a helpful direct message rather than a response which locks out their ability to delete the offending post. Oftentimes, people are not trying to be rude, they just don't know the rule with which you are intimately familiar. Be helpful!

Better yet, do something constructive like write your own articles to apear in various Burning Man publications. Instead of sniping, contribute to the better good of the community by spreading the word on how to be a better neighbor.

As we've often seen on the playa, a constructive word to the wise can often serve to avoid a flare-up. People get in over their heads both on the playa and on the e-playa. Good neighbor policy there should also work in our virtual community.

Fortunately, in the current situation, the poster was able to delete the cross post before any replies occurred. The same could have been accomplished without trying to out someone who worked really hard on their project, but really was not a frequent denizen of the e-playa.

Neighborliness does not end when we leave BRC. It should continue year-round.

I hope this gives you a good start for your piece. The deadline for submissions for the paper is the end of July. I look forward to seeing your draft!

At worst III is unspecific as to what, in his opinion, constitutes x-posting, and why he would bitch about it without giving alternative/appropriate places to post. Thanks for representing for the board-Nazi faction.

At best DVD Burner and his/her other/previous fake IDs bores us and ties up useless bandwidth with incessant content-free thread-killing "me too" posts.

At mediocre, I see Unjonharley is obviously enjoying his retirement from the known universe.

Now, dirty bird, I see you glossed over the Guidelines and any reasonable understanding or interpretation of conventional BBS etiquette on a few counts. I give points for complete sentences, but see some niggling grammar problems.

You people.

Yep and it seems not to be you Bob.

I've tried to be nice to you Bob many times and showed the utmost respect even when you have been incredibly rude to me.
Bob you disappoint me again, never knowing when not to cross my path.
I have over estimated you for the last time.

P. and Trey knew when to stop. But since you feel it necessary to be belligerent, I can and will INDULGE in your mental combat.

dirty bird has proven, with eloquence, the most diplomatic way of handling Trey's statements. I thought you Bob would have just a little bit more class as you and I have come to this point many times before.

There fore, no slack from me to you and I'm sure you to me.

Let the games begin.

I can't think of anybody more suited to do a piece on the eplaya for the BRG.

dvd bob is a waste of time all he wants to do is attack you and will use rules and tos against you. best bet is to ignore them you have good posts they just dont like you or anyone who is different then them.

you'll be happier if you ignore them and keep asking for plonk so you can use it on bob, III and precipate. they are a waste of time and bandwidth and rarely add anything to posts here except attacking others. they make the need for plonk more acute. study tos so you can defend against attack which is coming, you know it is.

bob are you asking me to break the law and import oxycontin back from Canada for you? That violates the tos. I'll complain to the admin shortly.

Sweet.

Part of my family's from ND, btw. There's a whole town that looks like clones of me, but they all talk like Cannucks.

Maybe ya'll can get together w/ Mr/Ms Bird on an ex post de facto exposé of the eplaya for the BRG. I'd certainly go for the drug-joke angle.

CGs? TOSs? OK I'm game

Post by dirty bird » Tue Mar 30, 2004 11:17 am

Bob wrote:Now, dirty bird, I see you glossed over the Guidelines and any reasonable understanding or interpretation of conventional BBS etiquette on a few counts. I give points for complete sentences, but see some niggling grammar problems.
I can't even remember the CGs (Community Guidelines) or TOSs (Terms of Service) to which I've apparently agreed. In fact, it took too long to even figure out those acronyms. Not wanting to place foot in mouth again, I did a Boolean search for "CG OR "Community Guidelines" AND cross AND posting" using this forum's search tool.

That yields zero results. Checking the FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) and the Announcements sections brought me a little closer to understanding "the line" that should not be crossed, but gave no concrete answers.

I'm good at finding stuff. I may even play by rules that I know and can refer to (like not ending sentences with prepositions). But there seems to be a game of hide the ball going on with BBS (Bulletin Boards) that can only be learned by trial and error. 5 posts into it, I'm not even sure I want to live through all the mistakes to get good at this.

So if the "powers that be" want neophytes to be able to follow "rules" on eplaya, those rules should be evident. Is that too much to fucking ask??

I'm pretty sure I can't say that, but not entirely so.

TOS and CGs research

Post by dirty bird » Tue Mar 30, 2004 12:51 pm

Thanks for the support. I had to think outside the box, but have been able to dig up the CGs and TOSs. Here are the links:

Community Guidelines: http://eplaya.burningman.org/profile.ph ... guidelines

Terms of Service: http://eplaya.burningman.org/profile.php?mode=register

I still think these should be referenced in the "announcements" section, but that gripe is more properly addressed in the "Feature Requests" section.

Dear Mr/Ms Bird:

You might say BBSs have something in common w/ B-ball. To quote Dikembe Mutombo, "don't run into the train -- run away from the train". Same w/ Burning Man, at least wrt to art cars & burn perimeters.

Try looking at page-bottom for the link to the [alleged] [beta] Guidelines. I think it says "if you barge in & immediately pull the meanyhead card don't be surprised at the responses, or lack thereof". Disclaimer: never read guidelines myself, YMMV, RTFM, TWIAVBP, and all that.

I'd add "no harm, no foul", but I don't want to make it look like I'm on anybody's welcoming committee of most-beloved eplayans. You make your rep here as you might amongst any company.

The Gazette people used to be a great bunch, at least back when III and I used to hang their shade for them. Oh, well.

One click on the Community Guidelines link at the bottom of this (and every page) will display the following:
Expected Behavior
Before posting messages, take some time to read the forums and get a sense of how people interact. Coming on like a bull in a china shop will not win friends - respecting the ongoing flow of conversation will.
There are different areas for different purposes within the ePlaya. Please respect their intended use, and keep on topic, especially when creating new threads, e.g., do not post political discussions in the Newbie area, etc.
"Cross-posting" - the act of posting the same message across multiple threads - is unwelcome.
Personal attacks are unwelcome.
Illegal activities are unwelcome.
The ePlaya is a no-commerce zone. Recommending a good deal you found is acceptable, gifting is always encouraged. Advertising items or services for sale or trade will not be tolerated.
Contributions should be intelligible and add value to the discussion. Before jumping into a discussion, be sure to read the messages posted and reply in context.
Your words are a reflection on you. They are how you will be judged by others. Be careful in how you present yourself. Once you have committed your words, you will have to stand by them and coexist in the community, as they cannot be edited or deleted.
We encourage you to represent yourself as you are known in everyday life and on the playa. Being yourself on the ePlaya goes a long way to building lasting, trusting relationships. Multiple identities are discouraged.
Remember that there is a thinking, feeling human behind every username. Always.

Other times, I just HHIS because IMHO I’m SRFPT, but really just SOL. I realize TANSTAAFL, but WIBNI we DTRT? DWIM?

WRT the BRG, WYSIWYG. It ain’t so FUBAR, but YMMV.

Ultimately, AYBABTU. SCNR! But GGSAYMAHDYMF. HTH. HAND!

FWIW, as I'm sure I've said, x-posting is poorly defined, and judicious posting in a few relevant areas may appear to be the only option esp. for announcements intended to be persistent (in the time sense).

However, newbies playing the "meanyhead" card sometimes just begs for a thorough trumping.
