absinthe,
HI all,
well,
I got my case of 190 proof Everclear, so, now, would like to start experimenting with the production of said elixir......
I've lost my contact info for "Zabsinthe" (sp?) and, he made some killer absinthe last year.
So, I thought I'd put out the call for other "home brewers" for recipes, techniques, and, to suggest we could all meet up and compare on playa this year?
might be fun, and, may well be a great spectators sport, as well..........if my experiences in Prague (Praha) are any indicator.......grin.......

When I was a kid I used to pray every night for a new bicycle.

No, but the reason I saved the link is that I too was thinking about making it for BM this year. I've never even tasted it, but I hear it's killer.

Ygmir, I had this link saved right under the absinthe recipe page, I think they have most of the herbs. Never ordered from them though, but as I saved the link months ago and it's still working, I imaging that says something for them.

Is it worth making? (with vodka-i dislkie rum)
Ive heard alot of the "green fairies" and hallucinations are unproven, as well as other general skepticism as to how its different from any other high-proofed alcohol.
that said, they sell crummy looking 80$ bottles locally in the LCBO, so i wouldnt mind making my own brew for cheaper.

I hope it is worth making......my experience is, it is worth it......if made right......I've had others home made and it was very nice.....
I'd not make it with vodka or rum, though....... IMHO, 190 proof ethyl alcohol is the base to be used....no influences other than personal ingredients, then..........
Everclear, Clearspring, and others are brands I know of.
I'm trying to secure a commercial source, though, for if and when I get a good recipe...........and prove it.......

Here's an interesting article in the NY Post about "Mansinthe", which is a premium Absinthe developed under the direction of Marilyn Manson, an Absinthe connesoir. http://www.nytimes.com/2009/01/29/world ... &ref=world
It sells for about $65.00 per 24oz bottle and is available at BevMo in California!

FYI:
Real absinthe is not cold mixed. Simply adding wormwood extract to everclear makes for a horrid drink. At worst it can kill you (wormwood extract can be poisonous).
Many (particularly Czech) absinthes are cold mixed horrors that are simply trying to capitalize on the resurgence in interest in absinthe.
All that said, there are folks in the US that manage to produce excellent absinthe. Sadly they cannot sell the product of their labors.
Wikipedia's entry is a very good.
absinteonline.com is one of the most reputable sources for real absinthe.
Cheers

You're approach sounds rational. Folks in the absinthe community are forever dealing with the fall out of otherwise well-meaning individuals that purchase 'asinthe kits' off ebay. It constantly amazes how few people realize that thujone is a poison. In real absinthe thujone is barely detectable if at all. Well below toxic levels in any case.
Serious academics do not believe that real absinthe has any hallucinogenic properties beyond placebo affects. Most of the historic evidence is easily explained by the fact that people were drinking stuff with a very high alcohol content (duh). Swill enough absinthe and you WILL do crazy shit (but then again if that's the result you are looking for simply swill everclear, it's much cheaper and has less hangover potential).
I expect to be bringing some world class absinthe to BM. Look me up for a glass.
Cheers

According to this article Absinthe is now legal to manufacture in the U.S. and it is also legal to use Worm Wood in the recipe.

I got this link from the Wikipedia. It was a cite in the Absinthe article.
