OT; need help with dubbing VHS cassettes to DVDs.

All things outside of Burning Man.

I keep picking people's brains, and the concensus seems to be that I'm beating a horse that never had all four legs to start with. That is, making DVDs straight from VHS.

In the future, everything will go thru a PC -- telephone, TV, photos, etc -- and I might as well get on that bus now. They say. And they may be right.

What would I need? My current PC is six years old with no DVD. Windows XP. I.8 Celeron. 30 GB, about half full.

Is this any good?:

Or?

Hey, sorry to get back to you just now but got side tracked between xmas, new years and all.
I've never heard of that company but I dont think you can go too wrong with the price.
Definitely cheaper than anything you will find on the market.

I say give it a shot.

only thing is, do you know how fast your celeron is?

I'd just go to Sam's Club or Costco--assuming you have a membership to one or the other and pick up a DVD/VHS player/recorder combo unit. We bought one a year or so ago and it works great. We are in the process of converting a large VHS library to DVD and haven't had one disk that doesn't play. We've tested the DVD's on several players too. It's about as foolproof and easy as you could want it to be.

That's what I thought I was doing! (Although I bought mine at Best Buy.)

Tell me, please... What kind of discs are you recording on? Mine uses only +R and +RW, and several people have suggested that -R may be less troublesome. Hey, please tell me exactly what kind of machine it is, and maybe I'll get one just like it. It is a great relief to hear that somebody is doing this successfully.

Off Topic. Not Burning Man related. Seems to be fairly common usage on boards like this -- let's people know that they can skip it and not miss anything important to the topic at hand.

Never seen it before.
How exactly does one go off topic on here?

Overtime
Oberer Totpunkt
Occupational therapy
Oblivious transfer
Offensive tackle
Old Testament
Operating Thetan
Operating theatre
Operational Transformation
Optimality theory
Obrněný Transportér
and then there's the mongolian goddess.....

Well, I've seen it on other boards, like the BMW motorcycle board, and it made sense to me. I figure most folks who read ePlaya want to learn about BM, and this "heads up" lets them skip a topic that is not directly related to BM, but is a conversation between burners on an unrelated topic. But I should have spelled it out "Off topic".

Now, where's JK with his recorder information? I'm on the fence about buying a new recorder or a new PC for this purpose.

Sorry. We're using +R, but our recorder does all formats. We got it at Sam's club about a year ago. It's a Panasonic. We didn't do any research, just went on line at Sam's and picked one we liked. Other than being able to transfer from VCR to DVD, the only other requirement we had was that it had HDMI. I think we paid around $400.00 for it, but there are both more and less expensive ones out there.
