Hmm. I guess I meant using the golf cart for transportation and bringing the chair along with for times when it was needed. Like going in to center camp.

Plese post disabled facilities...

Post by Oldguy » Wed Jan 21, 2009 8:00 pm

There are in fact disabled access port-o-potties on playa. There was in fact one in centercamp next to the recycling dumpster trailers behind coffee support/ barista area. There were also large door pissers at the end of several potty banks that men could use, I suppose a lady could use them with a door guard and a female urinal bottle. I have a bedside commode chair that uses a sanitary bucket with lid. Nothing beats a private crapper. You could build yourself a pvc showerchair with a one-holer seat and crap in a five gallon bucket. Thrift stores often have commode chairs, thrashed wheelchairs and other nursing supplies...There are even commercial bucket lid/seats sold to fit round buckets...And if I remember correctly there was one next to the commissary tent/cafeteria handwashing stations behind The Black Hole.

I think a reasonable request would be that the disabled facilites be posted on the maps given out at Greeters Gate...

motron--it was meant to be a friendly tease; it just struck me that it would make a good euphamism with the right people, mostly because there's a definiate contingent of people who avoid center camp.
oldguy--I think there is such a map.

Gotcha! I don't get the vibe in center camp most of the time. Sometimes it is good. Many times it is weird. At least with the Jots we know what to expect(for the most part). There is really great literature on the outside of the Jots courtesy of our dear friend Robbidobbs and crew.

Doh! Yes that's right . Potties are shown on the map allready. I forgot, but then again Im old...That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it. Yes Center Camp tent can remind one of the potty later in the week. Late night performances have their own charm, however.

Back on topic. It was raining last night. Radar imagery showed significant rainfall on the hills SSW of frogpond, scatterred showers in region. Lovelock airport summery showed rain. Lower valley should be sticky.

Any local reports about last night and this morning?

It's been raining in Reno ALL day and were supposed to get rain untill next Tuesday. I would imagine Gerlach is going to get a piece of the action .. wuuu huuuu !!!! Snowboarding this weekend and a "crusty surface" this summer !! :) It really doesn't get much better.

Someone recently told me that the Playa is often under 1-2 inches of water over the winter, and this is what largely causes the crust to form, like a dry river bed. Can anyone verify if this is correct?

correct, essentially, except riverbeds, as far as I know, don't form a crust.......

I'm sure, depending on the year, the water can be deeper out there.
but, probably 1-2 inches in minimum for crust.
it also has to happen after the last freezes.........

I have seen lakebeds crack like the playa.
Maybe it just depends on the soil?

In that lake, people sometimes got dangerously stuck in the bottom while swimming.

Looks like there might be a good ice storm on the way? Will that freeze things up over the playa?

I read on eplaya that they alternate between 3 locations, A, B & C. We talked to some locals at the gas station and they were saying the location used last year "C" is always covered in sand dunes. It seemed like we drove out much further onto the playa in 08 than years past. According to the people we spoke to they said that location is always crappy. I was trying to search for information about the three different locations on the site but I couldn't find anything. I've been to BM 5 years and last year was the worst for riding bikes.

The elevation is 4000 ft. It's a couple hundred miles inland. It's midwinter. Yes, there's ice.

I've seen frost & ice in late March. YMMV.

The locations since the year 2000 have all been within a mile or so of the Rocky Knoll near the 12-Mile playa entrance.

Yes, there are dunes.

It looks like the playa got an inch or two of fresh snow, maybe only the 2nd or 3rd time this season.

It is melting pretty fast but at this time you can still see snow.

Don't spoil my childhood dreams, poor dumbo, all he got was picked on. No one ever stood up for the poor guy and he just took it on the chin, or, whatever elephants got there. Under those big floppy ears..at least he could fly, so cool.

I dont't mean to change the subject but it's time that someone spoke up for Wile E Coyote. I mean he never once got that damn tricky roadrunner. We all know that the roadrunner had an financial interest in Acme Corporation, whick explains why not a single device that Mr. Coyote ordered from that company worked as advertised. We all saw that evil road runner just tease coyote, stop right in front of him, say FUCK YOU! FUCK YOU! (thats what beep, beep means in roadrunner) That was cruel, uncalled for bullying by a roadrunner who just wanted to make the coyote look stupid. I would sign a petition if someone had one.

the following explains it all.

oh, back to subject, the rain in gerlach falls mainly on the firlock.

Hate that roadrunner. Hate tweety bird. Hate bugs bunny. Don't really like the whole basic story in cartoons.

Oh, pish tosh... Road Runner didn't even have a proper name, just binomial nomenclature -- eg Semper food-ellus.
