Burning man is about those things that you would never dream of trying out in the real world. Experimentation with yourself and others(not implying drugs but anything in general). Maybe finding a part of you that you never knew was there. Meeting a bunch of cool people who are more different from you than you ever imagined, but yet somehow similar to yourself. Its about getting away and having fun.

Don't step off of the train
Vehement Pussy, your confusion, frankly, is understandable. But realize that (as others have pointed out) the e-playa attracts only a small sliver of burners.
In my virgin experience last year my art project was a total fucking bust that I never pulled off; I camped alone and my structure blew over in the first windstorm and I ended up sleeping in my car; the two friends I had pre-event were on the other side of the city and it took me 2-3 days to find them.
That said, I can count negative experiences with other burners on one hand. It was negative experiences with my own issues/expectations that really ruled the day.
Bad vibes were limited to: A) one veteran burner complaining about how the event had changed, B) two people on bad acid trips, C) three people who were far too cool to be there and were rude to everyone.
In a city of 30K, it's really easy to loose the above and have the time of your life. Positive energy abounds.

It has now been proven that the classic vetran burners complaining about how the event has changed are actually Cacaphony Sociaty "plants." Recruitment is from street people, carefully reprogrammed and the tickets and gear cost is covered by the fundraising that they do as an obscure anti-birth control organization called "Clitical Miss." I don't know where they got the mailing list for the fundraising, but there are rumors of "plumbers" in the Focus on the Family offices.Skyler wrote:

-(and doing something to contribute to the event for others, having happy hour, volunteering, bike riding, art admiring, art building, staying up past your bed-time, gifting the dpw, gifting the greeters, creating something someone else will take home, be it a good vibe, a talk or a shot. and being *with* your people.)

For those of us that drive crosscountry to get to BRC, Burning Man also has a prologue and epilogue, that being The Trip.....There's a lot of interesting stuff between Michigan and Nevada, and I can scarcely conceive what a voyage from Edinborough or Queenstown or Tokyo to BRC would be like!

(but it's well-intentioned snarkism)
So, bubbelahs- it's a lot like life with instant karma?

Beware of expectations--you will rarely meet them out there, and when you do, they'll be in disguise. (IOW, go with the flow--don't be too focused on what you think "should" happen).
You tend to find out more about yourself and others then you first planned on. Sometimes that's a good thing. Other times, it can hurt like hell.
Above all, Burning Man is what you want it to be (even if you don't admit it to yourself), and you tend to get back more than what you put in--but you've got to put something into it for you to get anything back.
I'm not a veteran burner since I've only been once...but...
I went from loving it, to hating it and wanting to leave didn't care if anything was left behind to, loving it and never wanting to leave and cried on the way home.
For me, it's everything you want it to be and find everything you want to find.
And yes, I've been out there since to watch the sunrise and sunsets..
