Fabric store.

Also?

Milk - Grocery Store

Tires - Tire Store

Beer - Convenience Store

Look in and around your area for a "Mills End" type fabric outlet.

A mills end is basically a sub/pre store...

Mill=makes the fabric
Fabric store=gets the best of the yardage packaged for smaller purchases
Mill ends= the stuff that might have a slight higgu, or it didnt roll up on the yard right, not packaged correct for retail.

Example...a yard of furr at retail is 24-30 bucks a pop whereas at a mills end type warehouse its 10-19 a yard. Some times you can even get a slight discount on the less then a yard end piece when they measure it out.
Names pinemom, but my friends call me "Piney".

I've seen some really good prices on Ebay for bulk lycra. Supply is a bit sporadic but keep an eye out and send messages to sellers with multiple lots seeing if they have what you're looking for in the quantities you want.

I recently got old theatrical curtain for free!
Look for a place servicing this.

For packing materials, I tracked down paper mill ends and got a lot for free.
They get recycled several times and I got them at the end.

I have bought a type of lycra in black for $1 a yard.
I'm drawing a blank on the fabric name now.

I may have missed it, but WTF you need 2000 yards for? Obviously an art project - clue us in a little?

just being nosy.

You missed that he said he was using it on his art car, but I'm nosey too.

I cannot fathom needing 2,000 yards of anything on an art car. I believe that lycra is probably pretty wide as well. All I can imagine is some type of huge tent-type thing on the top?? -- and I mean huge.

Parsing his statement again-- it looks like what he needs is ten yards or less.

Why are we sarcastic here?

Because people ask for help without being clear about what they need, or where they are (very important, the net is a global medium, duh). We are asked to be psychic.

Getting off one's ass and heading over to a discount fabric store will reveal that they usually have short ends of fabric on remainder tables, for cheap. If you're not picking about what color you need.

If the poster is in the United states, Jo Ann's and other's have big sales all the time. And bizarrely, they sell lycra and other stretch fabrics, imagine that!

It makes me wonder where this person looked, if at all.

Well, now I'm totally confused (NOT unusual. LOL).

Maybe he didn't look locally yet because he's a regular "guy" type  and this is his first fabric purchase.

I never saw lycra on sale at Joanne's when I was in the market for it. They wanted like $30/yard for it. When I inquired about bulk discounts I was told I *might* be able to get 10% off if I went through their website. No thanks.

I agree totally.

I have a college degree in textiles, and that certainly doesn't make me an expert on sourcing fabric but I know that Joanne's and Hancock's cater to the home sewer, of which I am one.

The home sewer has no problem with paying $30/yard for lycra if they're making a bikini with half a yard!

You have to go OUTSIDE THE BOX to find large quantities that are affordable. The MILL END stores are an excellent idea. Besides, if you go in there and BROWSE, you are likely to find an inexpensive stretchy material in the quanitity and price that is more "bearable" for your project! Just go in and feel the fabric and pull it out and look at it.

Ah, yes. That kind of exporter. We'd need to be REI to afford that quantity. LOL

Good luck with finding just what you need. You'll probably be just fine since it seems like you're allowing plenty of time. Good on ya! :)
