We are looking for filmmakers to make short (15min or less) films that will be shown on a 30 x 45 ft screen on the playa.

sounds fun!

so are you looking for already completed films or people who want to work on some?

specific subjects or anything that comes to mind?

I think I might be able to help you out.

:D
I have something that might work, and I'm posting it here to gauge general interest.

For almost two years, filmmaker Oli Newsome followed the west coast Kinetic Sculpture Racing circuit with two cameras. He is now editing a feature length docu-drama.

Along the way, he released a number of short films from the individual races -- mostly just to us racers to shut us up.

At one point I spent several days at his house, doing "I'm ready for my close-up, Mr. DeMille" stuff. But while I was there, I was also looking for a film to show in our booth in the 2007 Man Pavillion. I wanted a real eye catcher -- non-stop Kinetic action.

Oli, good guy that he is, agreed to assemble such a film for me. We took his hour-or-more-long film from the 2007 Grand Championship, and edited out all that was not Racing Sculptures in motion. That came to something like 25 minutes, so we added five minutes from the Klamath Falls race. There is no sound, except generic background music.

We started running this non-stop on a TV in the Man Pavillion... and you all know what happened to the Man Pavillion in 2007. So few people have seen it.

You can perfectly well stop this film at 15 minutes -- there is no plot. There is just something like 40 pedal-powered sculptures racing over land, sand, mud and water. You have seen some of these machines on the Playa over the years -- there is a lot of overlap between KSR and BM.

Whaddaya think?

Do they have to be anygood?

i just started playing with video and editing - and am having a blast. I was hoping to put some news type pieces of whats what onplaya together, edit them as a breaking news type of thing that afternoon and go from there.

whats ya think. My time is limited on playa due to work, so i thought I would premake intros and exits, and drop the content in on the old laptop.

You might have said it already - but what format do you want? and in what media?

DVD, MPEG, AVI, SDcards, Disks, Thumb Drives? This sounds like fun. I was thinking of a sort of BM 911 thing as well. Who knows.

later

No it doesnt have to be good. We will show whatever (as long as its not commercialized i.e. no Pepsi commercials). The only way we will not show something is due to time restraint.

With that being said...for the sake of the people that will be watching please dont make anything unbearable haha.

As far as media. As long as it will play on a computer it should work. We are going to make the deadline sometime in late July/early August so we can just make a playlist on the computer and let it run.
So I think for what you are talking about thumb drive might be the easiest.

If I understood you right...you want to make like a news story of that days events? That may play into something else we are going to do. Our plan is also to go around during the day taking pictures...then at sunset we will have a slideshow of that days pictures

I don't see a snail mail address on your site, so perhaps you can PM or e-mail me an address, and I'll ship a DVD.

Edit:
For a taste of KSR right here on this screen, try this:

It is somebody else's film, but shows off the sport pretty well.
See if you can spot me by comparing with my avatar.

Sounds good - I know you want to preview material, so I will upload the intro and closer, and let you know what sort of content would go inbetween. I was thinking of 90 second news clips opening with a 20 second newsesque, kitchy, burner style of intro graphic set, music and "BREAKING NEWS" style of break in.

I have a few ideas, and will be working on it this week.
