Music Xchange Camp idea....????
Music Xchange Camp idea....????
So I'll be returning to the playa this year for the 2nd time (last year was my first), and have been thinking about some camp ideas that myself and some others that i'll likely be traveling with could do. We're all from the MI / OH area and will likely be flying out to sanfran then driving to the playa, so are somewhat limited in what resources we could bring to setup an elaborate theme camp. But I would still very much like to set something up that almost everyone i'm traveling with could contribute to.
My idea, which spawned from my 'gift' that i was giving out last year of Live Music on cd. Maybe some of you even got a CD or 2 from me last year, but that's one thing i have a lot of that almost everyone enjoys. Who doesn't like getting new music to listen to back at camp, during exodus, or back in the default world? Everyone that i passed them out to seemed very appreciative of the idea, so i was looking on expanding on that and wanted to get some thoughts from the more seasoned burners out there.
This could work in any number of ways...the Music Xchange Camp. My original idea was to bring a laptop, blank CD's, and hard drives filled with as much live music as i could find. I already have well over 1.5 Tb of stuff from all different genres of music that would please just about any music lover. The original idea came to me after hearing about the costume/clothing trading boutique that was there last year. What if ppl traded music instead of clothes? Perhaps bringing in an old worn out CD that they can't stand to hear anymore.
The 'tradeing' could also be ppl just stopping by and introducing up about a certain artist or music that we could check out after leaving the playa... One of those "oh if you like this, you should check out this band" situations. So the Xchange part doesn't need to be physical...it could be Xchanging information, and still getting some new stuff to listen to themselves. People that visted the camp would be able to ask for a certain artist, genre, concert recording, or perhaps even come up with a custom playlist that they want to go home with.
One thing that was brought up by someone that will be making his first trip out there this year, is the potential (il)legality of it... copyrights and such. Most of what i have are concert recordings that are legally recorded and are free to be able to distribute...so i don't see any issues giving those out, since i am giving it away for free and by no means trying to profit from it.
Then i also started thinking about bringing another couple hard drives loaded up with music that i have acquired over the years through some 'not so legit' sources...full albums and such. Even though i passed a few of these out last year, i immediately saw the potential failure of this idea if i try to facilitate it on a much larger, and somewhat advertised scale (by being a named camp). No idea how much the LEO's or even how the other citizens of BRC would take to that. I'm no legal expert by any means, so i'm torn on this idea of doing full albums. I just really like introducing ppl to new music by word of mouth.
I am an avid music lover who is always searching for something new and exciting, and love it when i can give that gift of music to someone else. I think if i could pull something like this off it would be a win-win for everyone who's involved.
I'm very curious to hear some of your thoughts on this... Good idea, horrible idea...been done before... Lemme know what'cha think either way!
Also if you have any ideas that would make the logistics of this whole thing easier for a bunch of us midwest folk, i'd love to hear those too.
Many thanks!

Camp RIAA...YES! LOL....I think that'd be better suited for last years burn. Saw a camp gitmo but was pretty surprised not to see a RIAA mockery represented.
Perhaps in the spirit of evolving, Camp RIAA has seen the errs of its way and instead of busting and fining people, they can be there to sneak around the playa to catch people who have never downloaded or received free music...and as their 'punishment' they are forced to come waste a few minutes at camp music Xchange to teach 'em a lesson.
Thought of the dust blocking idea already and have a couple ideas about that..
I'd probably take the wireless out and leave it at home. Not that i wanna deprive anyone of porn or anything. But that I don't want that temptation of having that link back to the real world though email or whatever. Especially w/ my virgin campmates, want them to really BE THERE all the time.

Your Gift Idea of Music - is awesome. But there is no need to create the CD's On-Playa and all the hassles that will go with bringing your equipment to the Playa. Burn the CD's ahead of time, or purchase a Lot of 1Gig Flash Drives, have the music already on them and gift them as you see fit...

that's why our car industry is FUCKED!
it's hippies like you stealing MP3's that caused the sub-prime meltdown.
i dont see how you can live with yourself.
