Virgin Help
Two questions for a firstimer for 2009.
Is the actual night of the burn on Saturday night?
How bad or will it be bad coming to the event on a Wednesday? Such as finding a RV spot, or traffic.
Any help would be appreciated.

The burn of the Man takes place on Saturday night around 10:00 playa time. The Temple (of rememberance) burn takes place on Sunday night and that marks the end of the event.
Arriving on Wednesday is not a problem. There will be shorter lines at the gate, and things will be very smooth coming through the entry for your "virginistic rituals"!
Parking an RV can always be done, but you may have to spend a little more time looking for a nice spot. You may end up farther out on the outter rings, but you will have lots of company there. Remembr, there are 7 to 9 square miles set aside for this event that we are penned into for the week.
My first year going, I was fearing being in the desert for a week and all the challenges I faced, so I went on Wednesday as well. While this is not a regret since it was so uncertain for me, I always get there as early as possible now. and leave on Sunday morning for the airport.
Read the First Timers Guide several times to prepare the best you can, however, nothing can really prepare you for this most amazing place and the time you are going to have.
WELCOME!

Modus Operandi -
Wednesday is a fine night to come, Tuesday or monday would be better. You can never see all of BM even if you are the first public person in on Monday. Traffic Wednesday will be a lot lighter than on Monday so thats a plus.
You will be relegated to the outer portions of the city, unless you scout around first - which really isnt burneresque in a 30 foot RV, but its done every year. If you can have friends hold a spot for you - thats much easier.
have fun.

M of O, if you leave next Monday, the lines will be almost non-existent. Trust me.
btw, welcome to eplaya. Make sure you get your shots. And I'd put on a pair of latex gloves bout now. You'll need them soon enough

Hey there...welcome to eplaya!
I see they've been talking about me again!
My first year I came in on Wednesday. It was great, everything was already setup and waiting for me. I flew into Reno and took the BioTour bus to the playa.
You've got to see the burn your first time.
And leaving on Monday is a good idea. No traffic.
JK
And from his comment, you can only imagine what's in KB's library!

When I was a kid I used to pray every night for a new bicycle.
Then I realized that the Lord doesn't work that way so I stole one and asked Him to forgive me

Ooooops. Sowwy. I do remember now that our good hosts the BLM wants us all out of there on Monday, in compliance with the rental contract. But since it is so very impractical to do this, I would rather volunteer to pay the BLM an other day's camping fee.
And being a "Safety Office" kind of guy, I feel that a lot of us need a day of rest and a quiet night's sleep before hitting the highway.
And it seems so wrong to give people deliberately false information about the Monday exodus congestion.

You dont have to go home, but you cant stay here.
There is no reason you cant pack, up drive to the north end of the playa and enjoy the hot springs.
Take the service exit around 7-8:30 (no traffic) and then once out of the trash fence, drive norht on playa. Stay like any other camper. Contrary to popular belief the ENTIRE playa is not closed during BM, only the portions and entrances rented by BMORG.
there are all sorts of people out there that have no clue BM is going on.
have fun.

In general no - no permit needed, unless you meet the "Specal Use" Category - the link at the bottom will take you to the page I grabbed this Screen Shot.
have fun.
