Temple Celebration Sunset Silence
Temple Celebration Sunset Silence
Please help me make this dream a reality:
On Sunday 6, 2009 from Sunset until the Temple Burn, the Citizens of
Black Rock city will experience something they have never experienced
during the Burning Man event: total silence. Coming together for the
multitude of reasons each person brings to experience silence and
stillness, we will humble ourselves before the earth, after Saturday
night's frenzied climax. The juxtaposition between the undulating
chaos of sound and movement Saturday night/Sunday morning and the
reverence of Sunday night will never have been felt so viscerally, so
intensely, so reflectively. Like a neutron star, contracting after a
great expansion, so too we come again to that hidden place within us,
with in our shared knowing glances and soft caresses. The sound of
the wind and the birds of the playa share their secrets with us when
we open our ears to learn and listen. Letting ambition and desire go,
just as they are so fully felt during much of the burn, bathes us in
the perfect denouement of exploration and elation, sealing our
pulsations cellularly to live our experience for the next 51 weeks.

You are not going to get any of these useless hippie ravers hopped up on E and blow and drunk off their asses to shut the fuck up for so much as 10 seconds. They'll be yelling and hollering and someone will be stuck in a fetal position just coming down from some bad shrooms crying like a little baby (trust me, I know from whence I speak); silence will never happen. Go to some nirvana someplace with people who are more brain dead than your typical burner and you may have some success. But I can assure you, at Barbie Death Village, we won't be silent for a moment. Unless we're dead or something.

hidden places and soft caresses

but won't that induce a lot of moaning?
so much for that "quiet place".

silence is golden
hello friends and phreaks,
it's really funny to me how the vast majority of the comments on silence are so highly reactive. not that i would expect anything different from burningman, but not even the most loud brazillian can be going 24/7. is there a chance for quiet and stillness except in sleep? is being cool really a full time job?
instead, i dare everyone who's gut reaction is to make more noise (however metaphorically figured) to beat their chest instead, or breathe, or stand on their head, or really directly confront whatever experience they're having, n.b., without distraction.
Blessings to all, even the incorrigible ones.

Joyful noise is indeed a valuable part of life. And that includes the typed-on-an-internet-forum kind of joyful -- and good-naturedly snarky -- noise. Look at my avatar -- does that look like I don't enjoy a bit of joyful ruckus?
But the Temple is also a valuable part of life for many Burners. I'm not superstitious or sentimental, and I doubt I would ever bother to leave anyone a message in the Temple, but I do feel it is very appropriate to have a solemn Temple burn -- even if only as a contrast to the Man Burn.
Three hours of quiet, leading up to a solemn burn, would add depth to the week-long experience for all of us.

HERETICS! BLASPHEMY!
may your kool-aid will have more hoo than ha....
this treasonous break with tradition will not be allowed to flourish.
Teo, i need representation, lets just say i'm deaf, right, and i cant control my "noises" or possibly i have tourettes, yes, actually, i DO have politically tourette syndrome but you wont find it in the DSM IV.
what do i do....not go to the temple burn because i have an uncontrollable and unstoppable urge, no deep psychological NEED to scream "Eat my dirty Ass-Hole you Giant farty Hippy Cum-Sucking Bastards" at the top of my lungs?
thats prejudice against people with disabilities, and thats just not cool, man.
not cool, dude.
man.

oh sure, smash the heads of some poor DEAF kid with Tourettes because he and his partner from NTID are making "Noises" and squealing in delight at the sight of so much wood going up in a fiery inferno.
why dont you just start stealing crutches, wheel-chairs and bi-focals?
bunch of Crip-Haters and Noise Nazis.
what if i have gas and have particularly loud flatulence?
should i light it? or will that ruin the spiritual aspect of YOUR temple burn.
what is the sound of One Hippy Burning? it's SCREAMING! i suppose that shit would be shushed too.
if you want peace and quiet at the temple burn WEAR FUCKING EARPLUGS YOU MORONS.

Can I bring my battle axe? It's real shiny!tubahurl wrote:Maybe we can promise the Barbarians, if they do quiet patrol, anyone who makes noise will have their skulls crushed by their battle axes, mercifully of course.
It will help encourage people to be spiritual.
A bonfire at dawn can be a beautiful thing, don't knock it til you've tried it.

We cannot reach 50.000 people all at once. But we could suggest it to the Organization, and maybe get it into the program. The idea would be to gradually restore the tradition of a thoughtful Temple Burn, as was mentioned in the old thread about people who do not "get" the Temple.
I'm no expert on women, heaven knows, but I suspect that most of the ladies would like this idea. So we might be able to enlist 25.000 burners fairly quickly! And... as most of us guys know, a happy woman is... a good thing.
Not negative, just realistic - cuz it could happen.
To the OP:
Out there, most of the time, you have to find your own inner quiet space, cuz it's hardly ever quiet in the city. Really, I think sunrise is more of a quiet time, but I usually miss them and haven't made it to a temple burn yet, so, what the hell do i know...
Now, on with the snark:
So, what's that... you're planning on getting a bunch of women to all be quiet at the same time?
HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA
That's what I'll say. And I'll say it really loud too.
AND I have a very small airhorn that I didn't use last year. I think I'll wear it around my neck this year so I don't forget to USE IT. In FACT I think I'll get a bunch of them that have different tones and play Marco/Polo with my friends every evening at sunset. Now THAT would be an experience... *bliss*

I like the idea very much, but particpation from everyone out there will be impossible. More plausible would be to gather as many people as you can find for a silent march or something. Advertise it in the schedule, make signs, and I think a lot of people would join in. As the group moves towards the Temple, I bet the effect on others would be fairly great.
Of course, there will always be people out there who live for disrupting such an endeavor. And thank God for them! Anyway, that's my advice, just do it and see what happens, but don't expect anything even close to total silence.
