In 2008, 49,599 Went, But To A Different Place

"That was the famous Burning Man get together."

Eurgh?

What are you saying?
- It should be limited to 20 people as it was in the olden dayz?
- It should be held on the beach as it was in the olden dayz?
- It should be a Solstice Event so you can go to your fraternity party on Memorial Day? :D

50,000 souls? That's a lot of spectators.

Podge-Pourri for $400, Alex

Post by gyre » Wed Feb 04, 2009 2:32 pm

The correct answer was
"What Is Burning Man?"

I would have been more disturbed if more than one person got it.
But only blank stares.

Maybe it's really a question?

What Is Burning Man?

Oh, it was in "podge-pouri", then not so bad....but it's $400? I would have thought it woud be one of the more expensive, i.e. more difficult, answers.

It's a 'Malcolm in the Middle' episode that takes place in a cactus filled desert, with a bunch of stupid people wandering around in space suits, and the head guy, who wears a big tan hat walks around spraying people with his super soaker filled with some dudes ashes. Then there's a vehicle fire. Oh yeah, you get to bang Rosanna Arquette.

Now where's my money?!
What other people think about you is none of your business.

I think the malcolm episode mentioned the beach, but the average person wouldn't get that.
So that did limit the answer to someone with at least some background, even if you did see the malcolm episode.

"What is that hippy-ass thing they do out in the scalding hot desert with drugs and free beer and boobies?"

I will go with "Counter-Cultural Festivals" for $1000, Alex.

Unless that was a Jeopardy rerun, they had the same questions about three years ago. But it seems to me it was one of the Daily Doubles, and the answer went something like this: "It's the largest outdoors art festival held in North America, every year over Labor Day, north of Reno."

The person didn't get it then, either. Thank God.

I thought there was a thread for fictional mentions of burning man, but i can't find it.
Search for 'jeaopardy' pulls up 54 answers, this not being the first.

I just saw burning man and burning woman mentioned in the first minute of the "World's Greatest Teacher" episode of Sit Down, Shut Up.
There was a tuba and fire involved.

I like that the call 45,000+ people a "famous get together" makes it seem real homey.

Somebody working on Jeopardy is a burner.

Sit Down, Shut Up always reminds me of Mission Hill.
Turns out some of the same people worked on both.
Maria Bamford does some voices.

Tony Bourdain name-dropped it, "...as easy as getting chylmidia at Burning Man..."

or something like that.

I don't think I spelled chlymidia right, but I am A-OK with that.

With some of the shit Bourdain does on his show, seems to me he'd fit right in at Burning Man. "Hey Tony.....eat THIS!"
Treat people like you want to be treated. Really...it's simple and it actually works
