I wonder, how about the spiral version of "dog tie-out stakes"? I know in the calechie here the last time I put one of the spirals in it took probably 10 minutes to get it screwed down flush. I suppose it'd not be too much easier in the playa if it's good and baked, or would it?ygmir wrote:I have had grand success with these, and, no pounding or pulling, just screw and unscrew........natural, really.........
a few bucks each, loop, safe ends, all you need is a little down pressure and a 2' piece of pipe to get them started, then, screw in using the pipe through the eye as a lever........

the playa is not caliche (sp?), it is a lake bed, and, is actually moist a certain distance down. Depending on the water year.
it has a crust, but, is soft below......or, softer anyway.....
I'm not sure how the corkscrew design would work. a person'd almost have to try it and try to pull it........
With the ones I use, I can't even get them to screw more than a foot into the playa, the torque starts to twist and bend the rod at that point. and, I couldn't even budge them as far as a pull.

Typically the rod is too light and the eye at the top isn't welded closed.

Those corkscrew dog stakes are only 1/4" or 5/16" rod, nothing like what you posted earlier.
