these are the kind im getting.

They are ESS profile goggles. Military spec made for iraq. Very dusty. And low profile so they arent sticking far out from your face. Also has swappable lenses for night or day. And glasses fit under them.

find em on ebay as surplus.

For me, the one thing that separates good goggles from sucky goggles is air holes.

Look around the perimeter of the sealing surface on the goggles. If you see little air holes (for defogging them) -- you'll fucking hate them out on the playa. Most ski type goggles have these holes.

Playa dust is like talc. It WILL find its way in through those little air holes and onto your eyeballs.

You want an airtight seal. Either buy goggles without the anti-fog holes, or use an Exacto knife to cut some strips of electrical tape to plug up the holes.

These are the same goggles I use and love them. They have closable side vents so you can have airflow when you want, but can then easily slide them closed if a dust storm hits. Worked great for five years now.

The price on these things off eBay varies wildly depending upon what category they're in. They'll go for more in the milsurp category but I found a pair cheaper being marketed as paintball gear. Do a global search on "ESS NVG". If you can get them under $40 for a new pair, I think that's a good deal.

Has anyone used these out on the playa? I assume since they were standard issue to soldiers in Iraq they would work well - is the environment similar? Does Iraq have that same kind of micro-fine dust?

ski goggles worked great last year. many ski shops have clearance sales during the summer. bandana over the nose and mouth and you're set for whiteouts.
