Tents
All: I used Car Port Tent last year,= no good. Links for Domes very cool and easy to use (see above links) but not for everyone. I like Rouse Mouse's use of white tarp and conduit for BIG shade tent--put yer lil camper tents inside. Use conduit verses plastic tubs (pvc?) cause it is stronger too. If u can weld the corner things that is... -Mc Dope
Whoop There it Is..!
Hey now, if you have more time than money you should not buy some package deal but design your own structure. I found 2 seperate stalls at local Flea Market that sell to vendors. Bought a 30' x 24' white tarp for $30 and all the corner connectors for about $3 each. Check your local Swap Meet for the best lowest price! Forget sales tax, shipping and handling, etc. Here you can find all you're looking for in one stop and be home assembling that same day! *Some odd angles may have to be created by modifying the pre-made connectors, but in our case it was just a matter of leaving a few of the "nipples" empty on complex angle joints. Also, I saved $10 on the main tarp and $1 each on the connectors by haggling with the vendor...
If you live in a town with no big flea market or have more dollars than free minutes (sense,) you can order package deals on line or purchase those Car Port tents at any Auto parts store for under $200. The key here is to use your imagination and skills to modify such generic structures into fantastic shapes, to better suit your needs and not look so hokey to the eye...
If you have NO money (after taking time off, purschasing tickets, and spending all your money on beautiful playa-garb,) then the next best thing is a shitload of WHITE tarps to cover your camping tents, kitchen, and social space with shade!
I have "next-to-no-money" this year, but have bought the elements for a 24' long and 16' wide shade structure with 6' sides and a center-line height of 8' with a door at each end, for a grand total of $179. Say another $50 in Thrift Store decorations and some trash-picked carpet and lighting, $20 for the nuts and bolts, and it's still in the $200 price range.
Figure one of these per 5 smaller 6' round dome tents (x2 in our case,) and one for the communal cooking/party room, still at a very reasonable cost per person... Hook up with your neighbors and combine resources. Circle the wagons baby! (Maybe a private cortyard within!)
The options are so endless that it's hard to give a solid answer to a question about "how to make a cool BMan Camp!" If you're comming for the first time and have no clue--read these message boards, they make no sense now but will once you're there. Learn from old-timers' mistakes! (Somethings are just not right for BRC...) And remember that you are not alone, 30,000 people are asking the same questions you are right now. Look to your local connections first, see also Reginal Contacts, as there is safety in numbers. And remember: it's all in fun, right?!
