Who has made music on the playa with instruments that were made at home???

I made bells from oxygen and nitrogen welding tanks and played them in 07.........

Sounds like fun. Were they cut to different lengths to produce different tones?

I remember a camp where you saw a litter of car parts and drumsticks. Participants were squatting and banging away at various parts. What a joyous cacophony it was.

yes,
two bells per tank, cut at different lengths.....
I'm trying to find more tanks, cheap.

propane tanks and such don't ring nearly as nicely..........mild steel just doesn't ring like the high tensile/ hardened stuff.

the best seem to be high pressure welding gas tanks, whatever the gas.

maybe, a mondo wind chime, for the dust storms, rumored to occur during Burning Man......? just a thought, like lighthouses...........

if, that is, there were to be a dust storm............

I also today experimented with a gong, made from a saw blade.......it rang quite nicely.......now, to find bigger saw blades..............

I could get a diaper and that turban thing, and, be on movies..........

Check a place that tests tanks.
They should have plenty.

I found that the local welding supply guy has 100's of them, de-certified, but, wants 20 bucks each...........
that seems to much to me........I want quite a few.

If there is a large army/navy surplus store. Look for spent artillery shells. They have a very clear sound when they ring.

War bugles, trumpets, and horns...music store has replacement mouth pieces or you can turn your own, rams horn, garden hose, copper pipe, pvc or old bong. Assemble with large garden or shop funnel.( kitchen funnels are generally too small). Trim hose, pipe or tubing to get a pleasing tone. Blow Gabrial Blow...

I'm working on cymbals/gongs made from circular saw blades.....nice hard steel, rings nicely..........

they'll go along with the welding gas cylinder bells, I hope......

Cut chimes always sound flatter to me - they just dont resonate as well. nice work though

Its called a fujara. This one didn't turn out as well as I would have liked. However, it does get sound and plays!

That tube that you see protruding from tube going into my mouth happened to get cut in half. Now I can't reach the finger holes -_-. I need to buy some more t00b. Then I will give you some sound.

hey yeah I had a set of chimes I brought out in 2006 and 2007, made out of 1 1/2" emt pieces. they rang pretty good in 2006 hanging by wires but I changed the suspension to a rod in 2007 and it deadened them too much. the wires got beat up pretty good!

ps that is one monster flute!!! is it a really low bass tuning? very cool

Did wire work better than something like nylon or leather?

Were these wind chimes or played with something?

(I always thought wind chimes were so stupid people would know the wind was blowing.)

I don't have a picture, but in 2002 ? someone made a rotating column covered in tubes and plastic sculptures made from the big pop bottles. the wind turned it and made mournful sounds as the air moved across the mouths of the bottles. I think it was called Siren's Song.

The cut tanks did make a wonderful gong sound when struck with a mallet. yes, each set had a mallet attached.

yeah the suspension of a pipe chime ideally is lightweight but strong and lets the pipe vibrate freely. nylon rope would have been better than the clothesline wire I used but I KNEW that folks would be wailing on the chimes with the rubber mallets that were tethered there to play the chimes with. After two days one mallet had its rubber head broken off

so I sawed off the other rubber head and folks had two wooden hammer handles to bang away with. sounded better that way actually. true story: on the day I went out to take it apart for the trip home I practiced on it for awhile and Cowboy Carl moseyed up in his truck. I played 'silver bells' for him with two-handed harmony, and I do believe he cracked a smile. he's a legend.
