Using daily driver as art car base?

Post by Dork » Mon Apr 05, 2004 1:15 pm

I've been looking through car ads and adding up how much it would cost to buy and house an art car long term. Those cheap cars are looking more and more expensive once I start adding in insurance, smog, registration, transportation, storage, etc.

I'm starting to think it would be better to just use the truck I use as a daily driver (standard bed, standard cab Toyota) and make the changes reversible. The bed comes right off with 4 bolts and a few wires, and I could build a removable frame to fit around the cab. I could even extend the controls up to the top if necessary by taking the back window out.

Can anyone tell me why this is a good or bad idea? There are obviously some risks, but I suspect the hassles of buying a junker would be greater.

Sounds good to me, but I'd check with the BRCDMV to make sure that your alterations are "substantial" enough.

They will be substantial.. oh yes! Ideally, the base truck will not be at all visible.
