Yikes! I finally get to go to Burning Man!

Post by LostinReno » Mon Feb 23, 2009 12:19 pm

First post for the noob on eplaya! I made the trip out to the playa during one of the first BM's... I want to say it was '90 or '91, an old boyfriend of mine worked for the portable toilet company that catered, so I was able to ride with him out there. We were only out there for a couple of hours and in those days there were only a handful of people. I remember it rained and I was wearing Teva's, that was messy ickiness! (unfortunately we couldn't stay long enough for the actual burn :( ) Over the years, I've had several friends go (even one of my former HS teachers has become an avid burner) and have watched thousands pass through my home town and have always had the calling but no fundage! Hurray, this year is different! (recession and all!) I am so exited and can't wait to meet so many interesting people!

Hey there, welcome to eplaya!

Thanks jkisha!
I have a lame question I'm hoping someone can answer.
My husband works for one of the contractor's. I bought my ticket. We are bringing our camp trailer. I have no idea where the contractor area is in retrospect to BRC. (Hubby will probably not be there most of the time except for sleep) We have friends that camped at around 7:30 & Jeep last year (they camp in the same area every year, it just keeps expanding  ), they said it was kind of on the route to the contractor area, is it going to be the same this year? Is the contractor area really far? (As we would all like to camp together) Or should I contact someone at BM.com directly?

Are you at all related to Lost in Space?

What kind of contractor? Both fire and JotS are some way off from the city. I'm not certain where REMSA sleeps, but I don't remember them being a big presence at either Fire or Medic camps.
Here's the 04 map. http://www.burningman.com/whatisburning ... rc_map.gif We are apparently going back to the older map, as it seems 08 was a disaster. At the bottom of the map there's three things in a row "sanitation," "greeters," and "dpw." You'll notice that there's dotted lines on the roads to "sanitation" and "dpw." The "sanitation" is where the JotS fellows camp. I know Julie's Fire folks also have a camp away from the main action, maybe it's more towards the communication trailers and LEOs. At a guess, it's a five minute bikeride. Robbidobbs probably knows what it is to Sanitation.

Thanks for the map!

It will would be the sanitation crew. (Strange, thats how I ended up out there the first time??LOL!) My husband works for the people that take it out of the playa in the big tanks, I would imagine he will be pretty busy through most of it :(. I would also imagine they will keep the sanitation crew pretty far from camp as I would imagine that can't smell to great??
I do know they have a quad and are allowed to use it to some extent to get around. Probably enough to give him a ride into camp if it is really far.

I hope that is NOT the reason. The JotS drivers (I know that it's not JotS anymore, but I don't remember the "real" name and I like JotS) are typically mexican-american and blue collar workers, rather than "burners." (Not that mexican-american or blue collar are actual barriers, or at least I hope not.) My impression is that they are putting in long hours in hot weather and it's about the money in the pocket at teh end of the event, not the art or social scene or any of that stuff that brings "participants" out. Plus they get fed, and they probably have a shower there too. And they get to see the art and some of the participants gift them, so I wouldn't say that they don't see the bigger picture.

Hubby is actually Canadian. He likes to refer to himself as a professional poo & goo relocation specialist. Mainly specializing in casino sand/oil removal. He sucks....literally, LOL! The other coworkers that he is going with are all long time burners, so it should be cool! I have wanted to attend for years and he never really had the motivation, as we've camped in the region periodically when Burning Man isn't going on. We also have loads of friends that have been going for years so we are prepared for what is out there. He's not really a crowd person, but I think this will be different for him. If not he can go back to the work camp and hide. He would love it if you flashed him more boobies, I'm sure that will get him past his dislike of crowds.

Lost in Reno...First off Welcome home...ya you'll hear that alot right now...soon you'll understand why....
Second off, You mentioned a Quad, I dont know if Jotsy's get special privledges, but you might want to find that out WAYYYY ahead of time too.
In order to drive on the playa during the event you "means of transportation needs to be MUTATED.
You will need to come up with a plan...then a design, then build the damn thing!
And if that isnt fun enough for you...you must also do this while implementing all that...
Fill out a DMV(dept. of mutanat vehicles) application for said Mutant Vehicle.
Then when you arrive on the playa you must locate and go TO the DMV for approval and processing. And get your liscense plate/s 2 different ones if you plan on using it after dark too!
Here's a link to the info....

3rd....Come to Terminal City Village @3;00 and A(hopefully) and visit Reno/Carson/Valley peeps
namely see the Biggest boobies in the world to be seen by space! or at least goggle earth! hahahaa and have a drink!
Names pinemom, but my friends call me "Piney".

Thanks for the info Pine Mom! According to one of his coworkers who has done this drill for the past 6-7 years. I believe they can use the quad as transportation to the outskirts or to a broken down vehicle or pump (it happens frequently and to bring supplies etc to fix) I think it would be hysterical if they decorated the quad to resemble a giant poo, however I think that would probably hinder the use of moving equipment with it. LOL! (Hrmmm, may have to make phone call tonight regarding quad)
Oh yes, Terminal City is high on the list as well as the Barbie Death Camp & Wine Bistro.
