coming home!

so, i'm finally coming home, for the first time ever!
i grew up all over the world, though i am originally a Washington state native...but I am moving back to the [i]youuu ess of aahhy[/i] for the first time since i was a wee one...and as my "coming home" present, i am taking myself to burning man!
i think i'm going to bring black rock city a present from India, a fabulous and handmade and loving present... how consistent is the wind if i want to put something up that is designed to be ever-so-windy?

oh boyo am i excited!

Welcome.....the winds vary from dead still to watching your camp blow away - only to be found the next day snared by the trash fence a mile or so away.

However, if you mean can you fly kites, HELL YES.

Hello pontouf!!!

Mojo is right. It can be dead calm at times and then quite blustery, so a piece that relies on wind, depending on what it is, might take some consideration. Something beyond prayer flags might need to be actively monitored incase it breaks free. Iâ€˜ve seen tents literally lift up and just blow away. Items must be staked down well and an eye kept on the anchors. You would not want anyone getting hurt, no doubt.

That being said, the playa is a great place for kites and such. Follow this link to the Department Of Tethered Aviation:

DOTA

This is a group of folks who show up at Burning Man every year and bring some of the most beautiful kites Iâ€™ve ever seen. They know plenty about flying tethered objects out there and could give you good advice on how your piece would react and what to expect from the potentially sudden high winds.

I saw em flying ez-up shelters last year.

I think it did some of those cool triple axle thingys those little waifs do in the olympics.

I wonder if its possible to tether people, and fly them? Being a kite would scare the bejesus outa me. It sounds fun.

I remember seeing one of the mid to large size domes go over - it had a guy halfway up the outside trying to secure the cover. Our neighbor across the road a few years ago came home from an all nighter to a camp that literally looked like a bomb had hit it - she had an easy-up tethered to her tent and both were demolished, ripped to shreds and bent beyond repair. We were sitting outside sipping bloody Marys in lovely morning weather - it was like performance art when she came home.....

Last year was my first year and I had a hard time accepting the wind but once I accepted it and the dust all was well in my little world. The wind on the playa can kick in with little or no notice. Be sure to cover the ends of your re-bar.

Ahh, thank you for your windy words of wisdom!
The kites look AMAZING... where I'm from a Kite is a kind of bird...but I'm not going to lie, the Kites on the Playa look much cooler than the birds here that steal my lunch!
It sounds like my project should turn out fantastically...or at least turn out...
My biggest problem will be getting it from India to the Playa, but I think things can be arranged, It shant be toooo large!

And yes, I do follow instructions and take direction well...
