Political Party

Post by CrazyDiamond » Tue Mar 03, 2009 1:52 am

Are burners typically Democrat/Liberal, Republican/Conservative, or Independent/Green/Anarchist? Or is it just a mix? Or are the individuals a mix?

I think I could peg a Rainbow Gathering into a fairly small hole rather nicely. But Burning Man seems different.

I've never been to Burning Man. But from what I’ve read, I can't quite peg burners to a specific political affiliation, even though individuals and people in the default world seem to peg quite nicely into their holes. Personally, I’m a mutt liberal conservative green anarchist.

BM seems to appeal to hippies, hippie haters, communists, individualists, needers, givers, use it, save it, give it, earn it, love it, leave it. What gives? It all seems to congeal somehow.

Maybe the difference is: Freedomists vs. Opportunists? :?

If you like to pigeonhole based on what the majority says, we're all educated urban liberal white male artists who vote most of the time, and rarely attend church but find spirituality important.

Roughly 4 of those do not apply to me and I know long time burners who fit almost none of that description, so I'd say it's a mix. With 40,000+ people and no attempts to actively recruit from any particular group all kinds show up.

Why does it matter?

I's say Dork is probably close, although I don't fit most of those, either........

We're all the same, really, only different.........

Interesting thread...I think that BM attendees are "all of the above"--and nobody cares! Which is the great thing about BM. (IMHO)

There was a time when a good number of us were Leave Me the Fuck Alone Libertarian-like in their contempt for governmental rules, regulations and general Big Brother bullshit.

My boyfriend and I started a camp over a decade ago, that's been collecting regulars ever since. I always assumed they were mostly liberal leaning democrats, only to find out recently that almost half are republicans. it was a delightful reminder to me not to assume.

I will say that a slight majority can handle bad weather.
