How must costumes be related to the theme?
How must costumes be related to the theme?
I got a really great idea for an interactive costume last night ("interactive costume" sounds sexual; it totally isn't, at least not in this context) but it's not really related to the theme of evolution.
Am I going to be tarred and feathered for that? I've got some other ideas for art pieces that ARE related to the theme, but this one idea isn't. It's cool though. How will that fly?

There are strict rules. Unfortunately, the deadline for turning in non-theme-related costume idea forms to bmorg was yesterday, so unless you pull some strings, it's too late for this year. Maybe next year...
And don't bring it and wear it without the form. It's a $100 ticket and you get kicked out.

Hey, real info first, then the snark. Geez, this is like training puppies.
You will not be tarred and feathered, too moopy. Not only are costumes not required to fit the theme, costumes themselves are not required. This is not apparent in photos, as no one takes many pictures of people just wearing clothes.
A costume should be versatile, comfortable in the heat or the cold, and should not shed MOOP on the playa. Put in as much or as little work as you please. Bring comfy back-up clothes for hanging out in camp.
MOOP = matter out of place. Sequins and feathers are giant moop factors. To test a costume, stand in front of a high speed fan and see what falls off. If you don't have access to a wind tunnel, beat the costume against the wall and see what falls off. Anything that falls off is MOOP.

AntiM is so sensable and right on the money with her advice. Costumes or just strange dress can be as crazy and fun as you want to make it. Some days I wear a leather loin cloth and another day just cargo pants and a t-shirt and the next day, just shoes. I have several very colorful outfits (costumes) that I wear during the week, but none really ever have anything to do with the theme.
Again, as AntiM said about MOOP and things that shed---avoid that at any cost. There are so many cool and colorful things that can become part of a costume, but if they can fall off, DON'T DO IT!

Sorry. In a more helpful vein, most costumes are not really in theme. Unless what you want to wear happens to fit in with the theme, don't go to a lot of trouble to make it do so. My best suggestion is this: wear what you've always wanted to wear but are too self-conscious to wear in public. Whether that be bondage gear, a large fuzzy bright coat, drag, or nothing at all. Don't bother worrying about what is and is not accepted or ok (aside from the basic rules AntiM listed). But if you're thinking about interactive costumes, I think you're already the right track.

When I was a kid I used to pray every night for a new bicycle.
Then I realized that the Lord doesn't work that way so I stole one and asked Him to forgive me

I had it in my head I wanted one of those glow-fur coats till I found out how much they cost, and then wanted it even less when I found out how much they cost to make ... yay for 1000% markup! Then I saw the people that wore glow furs and it became like a Porsche or M3: fantastic cars almost always driven by dicks. You got the strong impression that people that showed up on Friday with their $3000 glowfur had at least one Porsche at home.
I'm always the most impressed with people who come up with the most original weird ways of making some regular cheap stuff look interesting. I wish I had the patience to do the whole thrift store thing, but I get frustrated too quickly.
Of course, you can never go wrong with body paint! I'm sure if you posted an announcement for 'young lady seeking people to paint my naked body' .... er well, maybe not so great idea.

Yeah I just saw that too. They are back to their price 2 years ago more or less. They used to carry them at Distractions on Haight but they stopped carrying them last year when the price almost doubled. They are less if you order them direct also because they sell to retailers at about the same price from what I heard. The only one I could find to look at in San Francisco last year was selling retail for around $3000 at this other place on Haight owned by snobby Germans who even asked 'do you have enough money to buy that' before he'd let me try one on.jkisha wrote:Price must have come down--only $1,700.00 now.

If you want to make your own you could buy a $300 fake fur jacket and about $100 worth of EL glued to the inner lining for way cheaper.
