Gas powered scooters
Do gas powered scooters run on the ground of the playa? How powerful do they need to be to work?
Are they aloud? Do I have to register them? Do I have to apply and get approved for them?

(Speaking as a former owner) They're loud, they're obnoxious, they're dangerous, and they appear to be still allowed under a loophole, as long as they don't have a seat; (as of last year) you don't need a mutant vehicle license. You are still asked to keep it slow!
Do yourself and everyone else a favor and don't bring one. If you insist on bringing one at least decorate it, don't drive it in the city, drive slow, don't drive at night no matter how many lights you have.
Better yet, get a good beater bicycle. Even better build a pedaled contraption.

Yes, that about sums it up...loud, obnoxious, dangerous and based on last year, and the operators don't know the meaning of slow or courteous.justfred wrote:(Speaking as a former owner) They're loud, they're obnoxious, they're dangerous, and they appear to be still allowed under a loophole, as long as they don't have a seat; (as of last year) you don't need a mutant vehicle license. When I was a kid I used to pray every night for a new bicycle.
Then I realized that the Lord doesn't work that way so I stole one and asked Him to forgive me

$7 worth of parts will quiet a Go-Ped down to acceptable levels with minimal fuss. But that being said, I think this ban idea is a bunch of crap. If they ban scooters, then what's next? The door starts to open to have the place declared a Wilderness area, and next thing you know all motorized vehicles will be banned. In short, before people start running at the mouth advocating banning this or banning that, they need to fully think through the ramifications of their actions. Be careful what you wish for.....

Oh, ya...that slipery slope argument again. I'm not buying it. But I'm actually ok with the scooters, let's just ban the people that bring them.Kinetic V wrote:$7 worth of parts will quiet a Go-Ped down to acceptable levels with minimal fuss. Yeah, next thing you know, they'll be banning cars, motorcycles and ATV's. Then whats left for us to get around... bikes?Kinetic V wrote:If they ban scooters, then what's next?
More seriously, I don't see why the scooters are allowed. All other motorized vehicles are forbidden, with the express exception of licensed mutant vehicles. Why make this exception for scooters? I never got that.

Tha gas powered ones should be banned, they are almost impossible to keep below the 5 mph speed limit without killing the engine.
I stopped one kid a couple of years and he used this as an excuse as to why he has to go so fast.
I wanted to snip his spark plug wire but i only suggested he should be walking.
There is always next year.........(snip)

LOL I actually don't mind any of the above--I have just never seen even one go at the required 5 mph speed limit or operated with any consideration for pedestrians.Igneouss wrote:So they are noisy, inefficient, loud, bad for the environment, and dangerous. Sounds like they fit right in.

You all worry too much, although that is necessary...
The ones i have seen go just as fast as any bike...As will I...but now I know they are not restricted, I will definatly be bringing one...
Oh and you ask why is it not banned? Same reason everything does get banned...they have not severely hurt/killed anyone...

The kid that ran into the side of my MV 3 years ago broke his scooter, and dented my pickup/broke plastic on the topper.
He said he was OK but he was holding his wrist and rubbing it like it was sprained at the least.
He had blood on his lip too.
he said he was looking the other way and didn't see me sitting right in the middle of the intersection...good thing it wasn't a pedestrian he hit.

Yeah, that One Eyed Dick. Puts effort and time and money into a Mutant Vehicle--and then leaves where anyone can see. Twit!gyre wrote:Okay, that's funny.
I bet he didn't let the distractions get to him again.
Still, you did leave your car out in the open.
