do not use the toilet or shower!
it's a fine thing[/quote]
Then what's the point of getting one if you aren't going to use those 2 things?

exactly!
the one year i came with a group in a motor home was back when the event was 4 days long. the toilet lasted for two, and we didn't use the showers at all.
unless things have improved markedly since i last went, relying on the pumping service to handle that is foolhardy at best.
i've since gotten a trailer, which makes for good weather protection, storage, and hangout space, even without the toilet/shower thing.

If this is your first Burn, then an RV may sound like a magic bullet cure to all that ails you at Black Rock. Even if you read all the above comments and feel ready to overcome these headaches (yes, they--Johnny on the Spot-- do offer to fill h2o tanks and remove grey water for a fee) do you really want to camp in a metal box for a week..? -POL

i'm pretty sure that they do *not* fill h2o tanks. furthermore, judging by both previous experience (on the organizational side) and complaints after last years burn, actually getting pumping service at all is a crap shoot at best.

Basically
The only thing we used our RV for last year was:
a.) SLEEP - you can still hear the heartbeat of the playa but that air conditioner for 5 hours a day made all the difference in the WORLD.
b.) a change room - it made it much easier to change and have access to clean clothes. we used the shower as a storage bin for costumes etc.
c.) microwave for quick meals that weren't being cooked outside
We duct taped the toilet so no-one would use it (if you plan on staying
any signifigant amount of time DON'T use the toilet!!!)
It made all the difference in the world to be able to sleep

it's your rental truck, storm shelter, EER, generator, trash bin, stoarage shed, quiet, comfy place to sleep, and moopless microwave enabled fridge havin' kitchen all in one. Then what's the point of getting one if you aren't going to use those 2 things?
do you really want to camp in a plastic sack for a week?do you really want to camp in a metal box for a week..?
that bullshit reductio ad absurdum argument does not wash.
so, if the RV thing is what you want, follow the advice of experienced RVers. If you want to tent camp, please do. Choosing either does not necessitate that you spend the entire event in it.people want other people to behave like they want them to behave

Yah big time, and since my camp's "RV" is our own old bus we bolted a row of stainless eye pads down one roofline and had a super place to attach a huge canvass awning to...tent and RV in one : ) I vowed not to buy water from the tankers (yes they had it for $1 gallon pumped into your container/tank) but...oops...left one tank valve closed and thought I was out Thursday! (stupid stupid) IF you can get all parties to do the 2 gallon quick soap/and/rinse then the shower can work. But our grey tank can be valved into the black tank to give the needed storage, rental RV's may not have that option?stuart wrote: it's your rental truck, storm shelter, EER, generator, trash bin, stoarage shed, quiet, comfy place to sleep, and moopless microwave enabled fridge havin' kitchen all in one.
If your's is a mechanically gifted group wanting to build-up it's own BurningMan transporter/home do check out the deals on RTD bus fleet sales around big cities (some ebay listings even). Take out the seats and there's 40' of mostly flat super hauling/living area to work with, the things are rock solid and sell for a couple thousand. Yeah I'm a bus nut : )
