How must costumes be related to the theme?

Short answer: They don't.

Long answer: Make whatever you want. Compliance with the theme is entirely according to your personal interpretation.

For instance, we have Santas, bunnies, clowns and pirates every year, whatever the theme. They always have a story that makes it fit in. Or they just don't give a rusty fuckwich.

Make it, don't worry about the relevance.

RE costumes: Don't rely on your costume for your only clothing at BM. Always bring practical desert gear for night and day, as a backup for your - well, whatever you put together as a costume.

Yeah, the monkey suit. They'll be like badly worn kimonos at Uchiyo-e.

they don't.....costumes are not a *must* and in my opinion are an overrated aspect of burningman. For starters, the elements dictate much of what you wear (e.g. practically nothing except a hat in the day with googles and handkerchief for dust)....the whole costume-ocracy thing seems to come from the LA burners who for obvious reasons are obsessed with appearances and "looking sexy." The LA burner uniform is a fedora and a long furr coat for men and skimpy pink furry bikini with barberalla boots for women....

just have fun with the costume thing....wear something you would never ever wear in the outside world but have always wanted to....please don't feel the pressure to wear the same crap everyone else is...... personally I try to spend as little as possible on costumes and pick my own personal theme (last year it was very much British Victorian twit )

Alt12 - you are so right about the "uniform" thing. The other uniform that you see for women is the bustier and petticoat with boots.

That's an interesting observation--I was beginning to think that you had us in L.A. pegged, until I started thinking about it and most of the long fur coats and fedoras in our camp are from the guys from San Francisco!
