Anyone know of any camps for 2009 playing Chicago acid, NYC House, Detroit Techno, Belgian EBM/New Beat etc. from 1986 - 1989?
IMHO - proper dance music!!! -Coming a long way to hopefully dance in the dust! Call me a sad old c*** but my hips are still ruled by this vibe!!!

Thereâ€™s countless varieties of dance music on the playa and it changes. Lots of other types of music as well. Itâ€™s all hit and miss though. Not really a "line up" so to speak. It just sort of evolves organically and you never know what youâ€™re going to find around the next corner.

One thing Iâ€™ve found about the playa. You can generally find what youâ€™re looking for and its usually in the place you last expect.

You will certainly find something to shake it along with. Dancing under that starry sky is a real joy you'll never forget.

The playa provides. Last year was Steely Dan year, driving out we were rappin rappin rappin about SD, playing every disc they ever made, and at 3am blasting through middle of Nevada we understood it, really understood it... So it's Wednesday night, and we are venturing out into the dusty night, jonesing for it, and next thing you know this art car rolls by, blasting Dan... it was a beautiful, purple butterfly...

dear 303,

not many people at burning man have much of a passion for real underground techno. i doubt that many know who UR is, yet they talk about techno as if they know it. most people think that anything with a dance beat is " techno", so sad ....

that being said, burning man is still a LOT of fun, even if the music department is severely lacking - well, when it comes to real techno anyway!

If you are seriously traveling halfway across the globe to hear music from 1986 then, you might want to spend your money on a time machine instead of plane tickets and car rental. If this is your first time to the playa, then forget what you know, forget your tastes, forget your bad habits, and re-learn everything the week out there.

Including listening to some of the most progressive unreleased stuff.

I know EXACTLY how you feel 303jewels. In spite of everything burning man has to offer in terms of art, creativity, open-mindedness, I have found that it excludes really proper detroit/chicago/nyc techno and acid house. Which is sad really because this music would work SO well on the playa. I love that techno groove, that soulful machine funk...I wish more burners would just get it. There are the burners that absolutely HATE all electronic dance music and think of "techno" as just repetitive banging noise...these folks will never get it and I understand that.

But the ones that actually play dance music are only interested in stuff like tiesto, paul van dyke, lee burridge, etc, etc. Mainly trance-no history, no roots...(or breaks-which I actually have grown to like a lot). I remember one burner who was "shocked" to discover that techno has it's roots in the black community in detroit in the early 80's (actually goes back to the black disco parties in the ghettos across the US-but that's a whole another story)... I had some records with me that year and I tried to play a few spots but it was hard to convince people to give a shot. The two tiny spots I managed to spin at were at bad times and locations but I still got some people groovin'. The plan for next year is to get a sound system out there somehow. One thing that burners don't seem to get is that TECHNO is not ALL dance music! It refers to a specific type separate from trance, breaks, jungle. And it has so much history! Europeans like yourself, 303, understand this best because they took this music and nurtured which is why the BEST place to hear this music is in Europe. Anyway, i digress, that's my rant for the day.... I hope I didn't sour your view on Burning Man, 303, because although proper techno is not understood/cared for there are SO many other beautiful reasons to love BM such as the art, the music, the magical desert, and the people. And there's also other great music here as well. But if anyone actually cares about finding out what "techno" really is all about here's some background:

I fully expect to be bombarded with fluffy limp-wristed psytrance most of the time, as although I've never been before I have an idea what the dance music will be like.

BUT: I am bringing a handful of funky techno/warehouse party techno records with me from England and I am going to try and get a set or two.

Anyone know anyone who might let me have a go on the decks?

Take your own music man, thats what I'm doing next year, I haven't been either. Guess you can see the same thing as me?

BM does look like the last 'hope' - sure you know what I mean! - deffinately a potential 'resurection'!!!!!! - Looks like its down to the U.K again (at least on the music front). Keep up your thought train man - there ain't many of us about!

Because theres far too much commercial influence!!!!!, we are underground, you have a lot to thank us for! We are modest...... and patient..... we only care about you. Us 'rave fairies' despite knocking on 40 just do!!!!!!!

AND theres a difference between 'prance' and 'dance'.

last year there was a fabulous funk bar on the esplanade. one night they were playing chicago funky acidy house. i danced for hours. I can't remember their name but they were at 8 30 and esplanade. I love the small bars/clubs If I were you i would look for those. I'm old school and love house. I have had some success finding it at burningman, I just avoid the big clubs. Unfortunately deep end is no more but damn were they a good place to dance the sun away

not quite the old school your refering too, but if you make it to burning man, and care to explore the newer sounds of techno, tech house, deep tech stop by "spontaneous planning camp" each day.. Im pretty sure i can get those hips moving.. Ill also be playin a bit of funk, dub, and breaks, as well as progressive and some good ol house music. funky EDM for all tastes. ohh and our dancefloor will be shaded and lined with misters :)
