wow, it's almost like a cosmic learning curve. Although I think I am getting a headache, I feel like I have learned something TODAY.theCryptofishist wrote:Shouldn't this be in the "What I Didn't Learn Yesterday" thread?wedeliver wrote:Yesterday I learned nothing. When I was a kid I used to pray every night for a new bicycle.
Then I realized that the Lord doesn't work that way so I stole one and asked Him to forgive me

My used washing machine uses 22.5 gallons of water to wash and another 22.5 gallons to rinse a single heavy load of laundry. 45 gallons for a single load cycle.
I drained water from the machine into a no. 3 washtub. Nine 10 quart buckets was used to irrigate my cedar tree by hand between wash and rinse cycles If I had two tubs I could switch drain tube over between wash and rinse cycles. Probably washtub capacity was designed for just this purpose.
Wash drainage was mostly soapy water which the truly frugal could refill machine for next load. Rinse water was dirty and would not be reusable for wash. But like I did it could be used for irrigation of trees.
I think I will start looking for a second no. 3 tub. I then could run another load while irrigating. I think I could get away with using rinse water in my vegetable garden but not soapy wash water.
I wonder how many washloads I could finagel by reusing the wash water?
I learned I love my little redwagon. I could haul 3 buckets. 3 trips emptied my washtub.

Do a google search for grey water recycling--you might be able to set up a system that is less labor intensive.Oldguy wrote:My used washing machine uses 22.5 gallons of water to wash and another 22.5 gallons to rinse a single heavy load of laundry. 45 gallons for a single load cycle.

Yes, it would need to be treated/filtered first. I was doing a lot of research on this in preparation for this year's burn. Rather than using an evap pond for shower water, we are going to filter and treat it, then either reuse if for showering again or it will at least be clean enough to sprinkle on the playa.Oldguy wrote:Thanks JK. I found out my idea of using a tub is better than a direct hose connection from drain. Grey water not recommended on edibles, or on high traffic lawns, contamination risk.. Shadetrees and ornamentals are ok.
Actually, the filter system we are thinking of would (should) make the water safe to drink, but I was already pushing my luck getting him to agree to reuse it for showering!
