Portable Microwave?!

Post by djaded » Sun Mar 22, 2009 8:48 am

I was wondering if anyone has used a portable microwave called "the wave box" on the playa? If they work, I am sooo getting one. Crappy Coleman stoves and I do not mix. I look a lot better with unsinged eyebrows.

looks handy,

fairly high power needs, if using a battery.
are you thinking of using it 12V?
if not, why not just get a used microwave from a thrift store and plug it into a genny?
for 200 bucks, you can get a used microwave and tequila to go with it........

just some thoughts.

good luck

Interesting. Never used one, never heard of it until your post, but it looks like it would be a great convenience. The big drawback is that it only produces 235 Watts of when you run it off a battery. Lots of things won't cook that well with so little power. Plus it's $200.00. (and out of stock at the moment).

So, if you're going to need a generator anyway to get the maximum power out of it, you might as well get a cheap higher wattage standard microwave.

I hear that. This is why I spend the week out there pretty much living on peanut M&M's. That and the kindness of neighbors.

Last yr a neighbor tried using a solar oven she made. Tried to bake a cake and could only get about half of it cooked. Her build kinda looked like it was thrown together at the last minute. I've read about them and it was the first time I got to check one out in action. Im intriqued, if I get the time I may try to try my hand at one for this yr. It seems like the perfect environment to use one.

I really was thinking about ways to save the time/space/effort of hauling a generator from Texas but oh the possibilities if I did. The more creature comforts I accumulate for the playa the bigger the pain in my ass to get my stuff there. So... This year I am getting a storage unit in Reno...and a margarita machine to run off my new generator.

Louise and I camped with a guy who used one to perfection.

for more photos of it in action at Death Valley. He made pizzas from scratch (made his own dough, grated the cheese from blocks, etc.) and baked them at Death Valley and at Burning Man.

In those photos, you'll also notice someone baking a turkey on his Weber BBQ, and Louise baked a pie using a cardboard box as an oven on our Weber BBQ grill.

Phil, the turkey looks good :D

The solar oven is obviously a pretty gnarly unit, I'm guessing commercial made?

Yes. He used it a lot and found the quality well worth whatever it cost. I don't remember the price anymore, but it wasn't cheap.

Yeah? And whose girlfriend - aka Ms. Goddammit - had to keep going over to the neighbors - aka me - for a cold Coke 'cause her 'boyfriend' couldn't be bothered to bring a goddamed six pack of Coke despite having hauled out the 20,000 lbs. of rusted scrap metal and spare parts known as the Playa Cruiser?

Sure, I got to ride around on the boat all week but I had to give up a couple of priceless cans of Coke.

Wasn't diet either.

Well I wasn't in charge of non-alcoholic provisions.
We had a metric shitload of booze...
