MV licensing

Post by ¡Niers! » Mon Mar 23, 2009 1:12 pm

So, I've read the licensing form and everything else about MVs I could find.
I've come to the conclusion that if the vehicle is pedal powered, it does not require licensing.
Am I right?
And if I am right, I have a 4-wheeled pedal car that I am working on that I was thinking about incorporating an electric motor assist to. The motor would not be strong enough to propel the vehicle with 3 passengers alone, just make it easier to pedal in the playa dirt.
Does anyone know about these issues? I don't want to submit the form if I don't have to and I also don't want to get myself into trouble either. I love the DMV hotties. They work hard to keep the Playa safe.
I just don't want to wind up bringing something that I can't use while I am home.

OK

We bring a four wheeled bike. No problem. The assist motor makes such a bike a vehicle with seats, requiring a license.

We've been harassed at the Gate, the gal couldn't believe our battery was just for lights. We convinced her, but if we'd had an assist motor, the bike would have been impounded.

last year was the first time pedal power alone failed, due to deep dust and a soft surface. Otherwise, it has been running well since 2002. Sure, the bearings need changing now and then and the brakes get funky, but nothing serious.

I once brought a bike with an "assist motor", a tiny gas engine that took the work out of pedalling but wasn't dtrong enough to propel the bike on it's own... got chased down by the DMV.

Correct. So long as you have ONLY pedal power for propulsion -- as mentioned already.
