travelling out

Post by sundaymorning » Mon Mar 23, 2009 12:25 pm

it's going to be my first time and i am real excited. i'm still making plans to carpool there, that should be fun, what i am worried about is getting home.

maybe this was poor planning, but i'm supposed to be across the country on september 8th. okay, very poor planning, but in these modern times it shouldn't be so hard to book a flight, right?

so, i was wondering if anyone has experience with catching a flight directly after the burn. is the reno airport the most convenient place? how hard will it be to catch a ride there? And, maybe this is a dumb question but if burning man ends on september 7th this year does that mean people leave the morning of the 7th? or does it last through the night and people pack up and leave on the morning of the 8th?

also, how common is early departure? maybe i should leave a day or so early just to ensure that i get back on the right day. i don't have a car so the hardest part will be finding people i can hitch a ride with.

sorry for the frantic post. i just want to make sure i have this planned out before i go!

Easy does it grasshopper!
Getting a ride out of Burning Man is rather easy since everyone leaving are heading toward Reno. If you ask around your camp, you will find lots of people heading out at differentI would however make plane reservations early rather than the day you want to fly.
If possible, you might consider renting a subcompact car just to get back and forth from Reno to BRC.

Welcome to eplaya.

I had to be back in NY for work Tuesday morning. Left late Sunday night, stayed in a hotel in Reno, showered like a thousand times before heading on a red-eye flight back to NY Monday night (via Phoenix since there were no direct flights).

Having that hotel in Reno was a BIG necessity for me. It wasn't until the 5th shower that I stopped sweating dust. Seriously, I would get out of the shower after having scrubbed like mad, and within an hour would have a brown ring around my collar and bottom of feet. It was hilarious.

I plan on reserving a room in Reno again this time, even if I don't show up until the morning, just so I can take that shower and get used to "default world" before boarding a plane for a LONG ride home.

Here's a link to a thread prior to last year's burn re: time needed for exodus. I found it helpful in making my plans.

Thanks, that's very helpful! I like the hotel idea, but I also think it might be funny to show up to the first day of school with a few coats of dirt. That could be a decision I will regret, or the people sitting next to me on the plane will regret.

So is the schedule the same every year? Saturday night is the man burn and sunday night is the temple burn. Does that mean most people leave monday?

Unless you're on a clean-up crew - DPW, large ThemeCamp, Exodus, you are expected to leave the playa on Monday...Exodus begins Saturday after the burn(but DO stay for the Temple burn on Sunday - very special!), and continues into Monday night - 36 hours to exit 45,000 dusty, tired burners down a two lane country road! WHEW!

I'm not sure what you mean by "catching a ride" at the Reno airport -- but if you want inexpensive airfare and a guaranteed seat on a flight you'll want to purchase your airline ticket at least 21 days in advance for your return (strictly from a cost standpoint).

Don't go to Reno airport after BM expecting to find a seat on a flight, much less one that isn't MUCH more expensive than if you booked ahead of time.

If you know your return date, search for cheap airfare now and book a seat. You'll be glad you did.

Correct. But it can take all day to get out of BRC on Monday, so you must not plan on zipping to Reno Monday for a late Monday flight. You need to leave Sunday night after the Temple burn. Arrive Reno midnight-ish, shower and sleep, be at airport in plenty of time for flight Monday. If I understand your needs correctly.

Greetings sundaymorning. The car rental isnt a bad idea, that way you know for sure you'll be able to get out when you want to. At the least, try and make arrangements for your exodus before you get out there. Maybe you can hook up with local burners in your area, which, btw, is where?

:)
Excuse me Ma'am, your going to feel a small prick.

thanks! you guys have eased my nerves. i'm definitely buying the plane ticket as soon as possible, i just might have to wait awhile before i figure out my transportation to the airport. it sounds like most people head that way though, so i'm hoping someone will give me a lift.

i'm from minneapolis, haven't met any burners, and haven't planned my ride southward. maybe i should work on that before worrying so much about exodus. luckily though, my fire-spinning friend has all the connections, she'll find us a carpool. can't wait!

Welcome sundaymorning. Along with making arrangements for a ride be sure to read all that you can and cruise eplaya as often as possible. There is a wealth of information here and many wonderful and experienced burners that will for the most part steer you in the right direction. See you in the dust.
