Cause pulling out the wires just ain't working any more. How will we stop this playa scourge? The huge "Walls Of Sound" facilitate the growth of mind-bending conformity.

The whole "DJ" thing is completely out of hand.
I see little difference between them and simply being at a strangers house and them forcing you to listen to crap you don't like.
my cousin just named her second son "Dee Jay".....ugh !!!
He is already doomed.
Her first son's name is Crimson Storm Martin.........kids these days !!!

Huh... No one's asking you to go to the "Large Scale Sound Art" portion of the city, which by the way, are both located on the outer edges as they always are. Furthermore, I still don't blast my music to it's maximum, AND, our sound system (even though on the outer edge as previously stated), is still pointed away from the main part of the city out into the open desert. I don't step on anyone elses form of expression, so why you steppin on mine?

BTW: It really teeves me off that you call it a "scourge", especially when I go out of my way to accomodate people. mmm, bx1, I think it's more about the sheer number of DJ's on the playa, not the LSSA area...and you must admit - not every DJ is as good as you are about being in community - for some, it seems BM is an opportunity to force their choice of music on as many neighbors as possible. Art that one can approach, connect with and enjoy at one's leisure is 'community friendly', 'art' that you are forced to put up with 24/7 is not...

If you would leave your "large scale " sound wall thingy more often, you would see that there is no escape.
Many camps throughout the city and on the Esplanade also are guilty of having no variety in the types of music presented.
If we all liked the same music then there wouldn't be an issue, would there be ???
Does the 150 people that are at the "raves" on the ends at 4:53 A.M. justify the sound travelling past the 3:30/8:30 street lines ?
Even when you are in Hushville, there it is...for all to hear, whether they like it or not.
You are only gifting those who would recieve your gift.............

Ok, I do leave the large scale sound art area of the city quite often, and yes I do often hear many LOUD forms of music. But, as I stated b4 you are still generalizing. For the most part, a lot of those people are breaking the rules. There are clear camp stipulations about large sound systems outside of the LSSSA area of the city. I was upset because you all seemed to be grouping us in the same category, both the people that follow the rules, and the people that don't.
And yeah, it seems like everyone these days is a DJ... I can't speak for those people, but I've been doing it for over 12 years and I love mixing & turntablism. It's my way of expressing myself and I don't think it's anything I'll ever outgrow. I certainly wouldn;t *force* my music on anyone though.

just FYI Bx1, I do appreciate the raves on the ends, it gives me a chance to pick up a bunches of dancers wanting to ride from 2:00 to 10:00.
Then as soon as they are onboard, I pump up the Slayer and usually have them jumping off to walk the rest of the way.
They always say thank you, though............

Well Dick, that's outstanding. I myself don't do "raves" so much anymore, but thanx for the info.

In England quite a few years ago now, despite all very large scale efforts to be considerate with regards to disturbing others with various parties involving D.J's and large scale sound STILL resulted in being 'shut down'. Don't get me wrong , I am on both the 'Fishes' side and that of 'BX1' and I am really quite compassionate regarding all the comments in this thread.
This year will be my first 'burn' and I would be quite upset to find any hate of large scale sound, equally I would also find 'crews' that were unable to express their 'vibe' via their sound systems equally as distressing. Having read through the Playa guides there does seem to be a lot of 'rules', some are purely on the basis of safety, some do seem to 'constrain' somewhat. I don't offer an answer to this as I simply do not have one, but from where I sit BM seems to be a place where one can be one, and all can be a kind of one. I actually think that this years theme of 'Evolution' couldn't be more appropriate. Having experienced myself a certain 'unity' during the Acid House scene, and seen the destruction of something both positive and relatively harmless by politics/divided opinion I feel it would be a real shame for something like BM to 'not work out' . It is time to 'evolve' - we all know this and that is why we are here, some of you knew this in the 60's, 70's etc, I really don't know what else to say and freely admit that my post here is pretty fucking pointless, I just don't know!
It seems logical that the large sound art needs to be seperated from the quiter types ( I am both!) but, this seperation is 'seperation' and does not conform to the ideal that BM is.
Without peace, love and understanding we will never be one, - maybe we should be more tollerant, maybe they should be more considerate. I don't know. Either way someone has to give up something.
Personally, I plan in 2010 to drag my sounds as far away on the Playa as permitted and if it pisses people off I would turn it down or off. I'd rather learn from the offence/annoyance I've caused than have a vague memory of last nights high. Having said that I'd rather enjoy last nights high eternally.
I think I had better go now.
Sweet dreams to all.

We are responsible for the sins of our tribe. All smokers are to blame, for those who chose to toss their butts on the ground. All dog owners let their dogs crap on other people's lawns. Here's One: Since one human being murdered another human being than all human beings must be murderers.
The point is, I have never received a complaint as many in my situation have not in BRC. In fact, I can't really see anyone in the LSSA area of the city disturbing much of anything given their strategic locations. I *know* there are problems with unwanted sound in other parts of the city where it is clearly not allowed. You need to focus your efforts toward them (in which I would gladly contribute) instead of throwing all of us under the bus. Many of us follow the rules set forth by the ORG, but I guess some people still don't give a shit. *shrug*
As for you 303Jewels, this is eplaya, and this is common. Truthfully at the burn we, we are getting compliments not criticism from people who probably never even come near our camp.

so, bx1, what would a strategy consist of, concerning getting the other 29,000 ('') DJ's (not the community oriented LSSA guys) to care about the rules of the community? Seems that enforcing the existing 'rules' is very arbitrary; I know from personal experiences that nicely asking the guy next door with a plan to blast the neighborhood all week rarely works effectively - usually he's chosen to 'gift' us with his 'art' whether we like it or not, and is offended that his 'art' is not appreciated. Suggestions???

While I don't condone the idea of taking a more "police" approach to these people, I do think at a minimum the rangers should be trying to enforce the rules more regarding sound restrictions.
Just in case no one is familiar, the following are BRC policies regarding sound art, much of this applies to outside the LSSA area...
Just in case no one is familiar, the following are BRC policies regarding sound art, much of this applies to outside the LSSA area...
Sound Policy:
The following four rules make up our basic sound policy:
1. Neighbors should talk to one another when sound becomes problem and try to resolve the issue through direct communication.
2. Large-scale sound installations MUST be located along the ends of our city. They may express themselves unless community complaints persist.
3. A maximum power amplification of 300 watts is permitted behind this Large Scale Sound Art Zone in greater Black Rock City.
4. Any complaints about excessive sound will become the concern of the Black Rock Rangers. Concerns about excessive sound can result in:
a) volume check and mediation between camps,
b) volume check and a final warning on complaints,
c) the disabling of equipment.
Loud vs. Quiet
Again this year we will have no "loud" and "quiet" sides of the city. These are relative terms, and they set up expectations that may be impossible to meet. These terms create infinite gray areas regarding what is perceived to be "loud" or "quiet," and this results in difficult negotiations between neighbors.
Large Scale Sound Art @ 10:00 and 2:00
All large-scale sound systems will be located in the Large-Scale Sound Art Zone. Like all theme camps, these camps will be encouraged to be as creative and interactive as possible. The primary rule is that all speakers MUST be turned away from greater Black Rock City toward the open playa at all times. The deadline for large-sound art installations is first-come, first-served, so when these spots are filled, no more sound systems will be permitted within Black Rock City.
Sound Complaints
If you believe your neighbor's sound is too loud and you are not able to effectively negotiate a solution, you may report this to a Black Rock Ranger station or directly to a Black Rock Ranger. (Please do not mistake a BLM Ranger for our own). Black Rock Ranger Stations are located at both Outposts and in Center Camp. A complaint should contain:
* The exact SOURCE of the sound. (Vague reports will result in no action or ineffective action.)
* The exact TIME of the disturbance. (Vague reports will result in no action or ineffective action). Please report problems when they happen, although reports filed the next day can be useful with persistent problem camps. We will not take action on issues of taste.
As a community, we need to work together to keep sound at desirable levels. This means that everyone involved is personally responsible for how they affect everyone else's experience. If your neighbor believes your sound is too loud, you must work with them to find an acceptable volume. You will need to check in with those that you are camped near to find out what other events are planned and work with them to create a schedule. With these actions you should be able to handle all of your own sound issues. If everyone works together there will be no need for Black Rock Rangers to monitor sound. Please pass this information around to other participants in your theme camp or village and to those that are not planning on being listed on the map. A community effort is need to pull this off.

Rangers aren't the police, and they (we) don't enforce anything. We're community members (just another costumed theme camp) that wander around helping people out and occasionally reminding some people of the community-agreed standards behavior. (We also provide complimentary bacon testing and hug acceptance training.)bx1 wrote:While I don't condone the idea of taking a more "police" approach to these people, I do think at a minimum the rangers should be trying to enforce the rules more regarding sound restrictions.
If you hear someone making too much of a racket, it's just as much your responsibility to correct them, as it is a ranger. With the added benefit that you may not have to go run off and find yourself first.

Well in that case you may need to ask BMORG to change their sound policy on the website which says: sound complaints are reported to Black Rock Ranger station or directly to a Black Rock Ranger (as I just quoted above). Or I guess you could just tell them to have it say: you can report it to a ranger, but they won't do anything about it.justfred wrote:Rangers aren't the police, and they (we) don't enforce anything.
