Cool glow-craft idea to share!

Post by ¡Niers! » Fri Mar 27, 2009 12:15 pm

So, a friend of mine recently crocheted a hooded vest out of some pretty fuzzy yarn. Turned out pretty cool.
I got to some brainstorming and remembered seeing some cool lighted faux fur lighted coats out on the playa that seemed really cool. I found some on the internet and almost choked on the prices. Ridiculous! $1,700.00 for a full length coat!
While most of us can't afford something like that, I thought about how I could come up with something equally dazzling on a budget.
I google-searched glow-in-the-dark yarn and found rolls of the stuff in several different colors.
I bought 5 rolls and they are being sent to my friend as we speak. She has agreed to make me a hoodie out of glow yarn!
I'm excited cause this girl can crochet like nobody's business!

So I was sitting here feeling all proud of my idea and felt inclined to share it with you all.
So if you know how to crochet or knit, get to it and hopefully we'll see each other on the playa wearing our stylish garb!

Happy crafting!

That's a very cool idea. The last thing you really want to do is spend $1700 on a coat that you will only use once a year---and only if it's cold, and then have it get destroyed by the dust.

Have you considered working some battery powered LED Christmas lights into the fabric. I put two strings in parallel to run off one battery pack and the power lasted the entire week. "LED lights, they're not just for Christmas anymore"!

Go to your local thrift store.
Purchase any light colored fur jacket ($15-20)
Go to Ebay purchase 20-40 feet of LED strand lights ($10)
Buy Batteries ($3)
Tear the inner liner out of the jacket
Hot glue the led strands around the jacket.
Re-attach the liner
Place led control in pocket.

Voila my girlfriend made many many of these before the event last year, quick easy and cheap.
$40 buck tops and you can do it with any lined clothing item, shorts shirts gloves....etc

Glow in the dark stuff works _very_ well on the playa where it's really dark. In my area, you can't really see glow in the dark because of all the lighting and it's never truly dark.

You'll look wooooonderful.

Awesome. I'm planning on doing this with a coat and saving some money. :)

Instructables is awesome!!
I have seen that one and thought alot about making something like that.
I have all the parts for it. I was just planning on using the leds for a giant locator balloon. If anyone ever needs any sources for the cheapest leds......or anything for that matter, especially solar, let me know. I think I have been laid off for a reason. Lots of time to search.

Thank god for the $400 club!

Oh yeah Primus is AMAZING in concert. I saw him for the third time and he was touring with no opening band. So he played for a while and then after the first set.... he played the ENTIRE Sailing The Seas of Cheese album. And it was on a rotating stage, wicked cool. They had this like 20 minute drum solo and then Buckethead and a bunch of others came out and jammed. It rocked. Anyone know if they ever got back together? I know they were Less Claypool and the Frog Brigade for a bit.

On the actual subject of this thread ¡Niers! would you mind sharing where you got your LEDs?

So here's where I get my LEDs, they come from China and that makes me feel guilty, but every once in a while I guess it's ok. But hey, it's totally cheap!

Also, if you ever need help with wiring diagrams for LED circuits, here's a great LED Array Wizzard to help you from burning your house down.

Hope you find these helpful.
