Good goggles and a mask?
Good goggles and a mask?
I looked everywhere for an answer to this, but couldn't find one.
I've been looking around for goggles and a mask to wear out on the playa, at places like home depot, and couldn't find them. If someone could tell me a good place to get these I would really appreciate it.
Would motorcross goggles work? Would just wearing scarves/clothes, etc around your face work??

everyone has their own ideas and comfort levels.
With that in mind:
I use ski goggles, they ventilate and can be worn over sun or regular glasses.
I use a heavy duty, disposable dust mask. The ones with a little exhaust flapper valve in the middle.
I'd imaging motorcycle goggles would work fine, too.........
Some wear full on respirators, some just a bandanna.
some use neither mask or goggles.......
consider any breathing, nasal, eye, issues.
there are lots of discussions on different threads here with lots of info.
Maybe try a "search"
Remember:
the dust can be so thick, you can't see your hand at the end of your arm.
the wind can blow 50 mph
It can be hot
And, dust can get in the through, everything..........
I hope this can get you started, and, I'm sure others will have other ideas..
good luck

Search ebay for "Chinese Goggles" and look for the ones with the red D-shaped lenses. Cheap, comfortable, durable, and they fold flat.
My second favorite is vintage Wilson goggles with the amber lense. Most are clear so you have to hunt a little. Also check military surplus stores, they may have something to your liking.
You'll mainly need goggles during the day so focus on tinted lenses, but it's a good idea to bring at least one set of clear in case the wind picks up at night.
I just use a sleeve cut off an old t-shirt for a dust mask. Very easy to carry around, colorful, won't fall off, and provides just enough filtration. I was out there 3 weeks last year and never felt like I needed more, even when I was working through some really nasty dust storms. Don't bring those cheap paper dust masks they sell at hardware storms - I swear I find more of those as moop than I see people actually wearing.

LOL, indeed, those goggles on my head are a costume accessory only. They suck asswater.
I can't stand most goggles and I've yet to find anything that fits over my glasses that doesn't make me feel claustrophobic. I like the teardrop shaped racy goggles, and I have some old lenses out of a pair of ex-glasses. I think I can cobble together my own pair of prescription goggles for day use.
Mask? I've given up there too, and gone for wrapping up in cotton scarves. Thank goodness I used to be a hippie. And the stint as a biker chick, the bandannas are handy in the dust.

I'm in the same boat as you. I have those long rectangular frames that almost nothing fits over and when it does, it doesn't feel great. I used these last year: http://www.sportsmansguide.com/net/cb/cb.aspx?a=101537AntiM wrote:LOL, indeed, those goggles on my head are a costume accessory only. They suck asswater.

You can probably find them cheaper. We did at our local military surplus store. They work pretty well. With my glasses being so big they almost don't close on the sides but they're nice and roomy otherwise.
For masks I've found these: http://stores.shop.ebay.com/MTCoffinz_C ... ec0Q2em322
I spoke to the person who makes them and they said they can make plain colored ones that you can spray paint whatever logo you want on them. They're nice because they go all around your chin and stay in place nicely. (plus they're not too pricey)

These are pretty cool:

They're bandannas with charcoal filter inserts and metal nosebridges to keep them in place. Stylish, easy to use, and they do more than your average bandanna.

That's why I like being a bartender.

I got this one:

after the reviews it got (big, easy to wear, light weight, etc.) - and, a veteran burner I know, as it turns out, also uses that same one.

Goggles are over rated...they're always back at camp when you need them. If I need a scarf I just take off my pants and wear them over my head...I know, I know, but it's my funk...

Dragonpilot - if you just wear a pair of tighty-whities over your head as a default you can always be prepared. Put the legholes over your eyes and then just turn it around if it gets too dusty. Plus, if you've got a big nose like mine, you can stick it out the front. Works for me!
Best to use clean ones.

Heres my take. I went my first year and didnt have good goggles, I went for looks over comfort and usage and they SUCKED and I really wished I had good ones. IMO YOU NEED NEED NEED good goggles!! Not hand made or cheap ones, either. I got these for my second year and they are THE BEST.
Thse are over the glasses goggles, but I suggest them for people that dont wear glasses. Why? CUZ YOU HAVE GREAT PERIPHERAL VISION with these. Fuck fashionable goggles. These have great visiblility, come with day and night lenses (and its easier to change this one lens over changing 2 seperate ones, sometimes I change them when Im out on my bike, you want it to be easy) These are also VERY COMFORTABLE. I could wear them all day. I have sensitive eyes yes, and I like to wear these even when its not storming. DUST KICKS UP WHEN YOU RIDE AND WALK, TOO. I wear contact lenses and with these I have never had a problem with my eyes in the last 3 years.
These have improved my BMan experience. I could be a total sales woman for these goodins. WORTH 40 BUCKS. Your eyes will be happy.

THey are lightweight, they dont fog up, and they dont get sand in them. They totally rule!!
