A couple of questions
*I did Read a great bit of the website documentation but I still have some questions*
1. Does everyone only drink water? Is it stupid to drink mostly PBR for the entire week?
2. I have a "hybrid" bike with the widest tires i can get but it's still about half that of a mountain bike. Are those tires acceptable or should I get a beach bike?
3. I've checked 4 places they all sold out of RVs. I'm looking to pay a percentage of an RV with other people. Anyone have extra space?
4. If not I'll just rent a car. Anyone want to go in on a rental with me?
5. Where can I get clothes for BM? Army navy store? Online?
6. Are weapons allowed on the playa? Are there gun ranges? Archery Ranges?
7. Is there a limit on how much you can bring? Alcohol, Cigarettes that kind of thing?
8. Is sunburn common? I'm sure it is but what's the best sun protection. Is sunscreen every worth it?
Thanks everyone. I'm not doing an art camp or camp in general. Just volunteering for BM and looking to make my own fun. I do need transportation and hoping to get with a few people before going so I can hang out and avoid renting a car by myself.

First Time Burner '09
I have no clue what's going on. Learning what I can.

Hi, Adam,
Please take a look at Louise's and my Web pages on Burning Man at
http://www.cieux.com/bm/bmtoc.html
particularly the links for first and second timers and things you didn't know you'll need. This will give you some additional views on the Man.
I don't think anybody drinks only water, but you do need to stay hydrated. If you drink mostly alcoholic beverages, you may die. Maybe you'll just end up in the infirmary while they bleed saline solution into your arm from a bag.
Wide tires are relative. In good years, narrow tires work really well on the playa. In sucky years like last year, wide tires weren't wide enough to get through some of the drifts.
Clothes are where you find them. If you are thinking about 'costumes,' my suggestion is to wear clothes that are who you are. Costumes are what you wear to work. Wear clothes that tell who you are when you're on the playa. That's not a costume.
Guns are not allowed. I'm confident there will be no archery ranges this year.
There is no limit on how much you can bring. Too much is not enough. Bring more. You should have brought more. Or maybe I'm kidding. Maybe not. Who can tell?
Sunburn is common but not commonly debilitating. I burn easily, so I use sunblock a few times a day, long sleeves, broadbrimmed hat.
You should see if there are regional burners in your area and make friends now. That way you'll have people you know and who know you to catch a ride with and hang out with. If there aren't any where you are, then just show up at the Burn and be there. You'll make tons of new friends. See you there.

You can make this most common of rookie mistakes if you want but trying to live on ETOH for a week will land you in the hands of ESD where we will be more than happy to have REMSA hook you up with a banana bag cocktail. Newbies, especially ones that come solo try to party like its Friday night in San Fran, or Seattle. Problem is parties typically wind down at 2 am or so in the default world but in BRC, they party until the sun comes up and try to do it night after night. Wednesday newbie burn out picks up.
2. I have a "hybrid" bike with the widest tires i can get but it's still about half that of a mountain bike. Are those tires acceptable or should I get a beach bike?
As long as the tires are well aired you will roll around just fine. Good years you can roll around with little effort, last year blew!!! Playa serpents, and dunes were aplenty. Remember to bring a tube kit, and a lock. Bikes are joyridden all the time.
3. I've checked 4 places they all sold out of RVs. I'm looking to pay a percentage of an RV with other people. Anyone have extra space?
There are still some available in Sacramento, Fresno, Boise, SLC. Check out the surrounding cities. Farther to drive, but there are still a few out there.
4. If not I'll just rent a car. Anyone want to go in on a rental with me?
5. Where can I get clothes for BM? Army navy store? Online?
What? Dress Yourself, seriously though be creative - we fill up at Goodwill on Wedding dresses, and whatever else we can find all year.
6. Are weapons allowed on the playa? Are there gun ranges? Archery Ranges? No ranges, No guns officially. Be an adult about it and keep it under the seat or locked up.
7. Is there a limit on how much you can bring? Alcohol, Cigarettes that kind of thing? Nope - sin to your hearts content
8. Is sunburn common? I'm sure it is but what's the best sun protection. Is sunscreen every worth it? Playa dust is actually a great sunblocker I have never burned and only use the sunscreen on my face and nose.

Don't worry about it, BurningMan is canceled this year.
Save yourself a ton of money and just stay home. There's plenty of PBR in your fridge.
Besides, every store I've been to is sold out of clothing anyway.
Even if you were to go, you wouldn't have to worry about sunburns, cause out there in the desert the sun is filtered by the vast blue sky.
On the off chance that BM does happen this year, leave your gun at home. The greeters at the gate hand out tear gas and grenades. Those are the only weapons allowed there.
Lucky for someone like yourself, every year Wall Mart sets up a theme camp that is fully stocked up with everything. It's the only place you can use your money, so bring plenty of it.
But, since it's not happening this year, there's no need for all this, right?
There's always Carnival Cruise Lines. That's where the real parties are at!
Happy sailing!

Wouldn't a "couple" of questions mean you had two? I feel violated and abused--to think that you lured me to this thread to answer two questions and you are requiring me to write a book.

When I was a kid I used to pray every night for a new bicycle.
Then I realized that the Lord doesn't work that way so I stole one and asked Him to forgive me

Nope, nobody ever brought guns onto the playa at Burning Man. Total rumor.

Hillbilly stay home? MyLarry is an honest to gosh by gum West Virginia hillbilly. Anyone who knows him knows he's one of the sweetest, nicest guys around. Still, he's a hillbilly. He leaves the guns at home because that dust is bad for them. He does carry a large and interesting assortment of blades in all shapes and sizes.
Seriously, he once ambushed and killed a deer with his hunting knife. The deer was very surprised, however briefly. This is also the guy who caught an Eastern Diamondback in mid-strike (six footer, state record) and delivered a baby on a speedboat. Oh, and he can stand and dance for hours in five inch stiletto heels. Say what you will about hillbillies, he's unique.
