Port Townsend! I love Port Townsend! They host a fabulous Kinetic Sculpture Race every year on the first weekend of October.

I dunno if it'd really be considered thread drift... under certain conditions I suppose it would be possible to sail on the playa... :)

Would that be with the requirement of a time machine?

Three years ago, Camp Apokiliptika and Camp Herring held a contest of wits and art right here on E-Playa. Among the inventions was "Herring Time Travel Technology", and one of the ploys was to flood the Playa so herrings (the fish) could attend Burning Man. Terrific Photoshop work by both sides. It really was a taste of Burning Man art and theatrics, but on the cyberPlaya.

Don't know if it still exists in the archive here. 2006 under Theme Camps, I suspect.

I expect weekly updates on current playa conditions and it's meaning for this years burn so that I can continue torturing myself with anticipation from now until then.

Thanks Ygmir! See, now that's what I think of when I imagine the playa: vast expanses of GREEN. I knew the whole dust thing was a rumour to keep curious on-lookers away.

Hippys are not the only reason cow catchers are a requirement for registering Mutant Vehicles.

My favorite attraction is going for a dip in the river right after a burn. I do it even after the minor burns. We are hot, and covered with smoke and ash... and then right into the river. Major treat!

nothin' like a dip in the "playa Ganges" to wash the body and cleanse the soul................

I always watch for the bodies of the up-river folks, though. They bury their dead in the river........make nice rafts, and, attract crawdads and catfish, for, your dining pleasure.....

I saw some "River Xtians" downstream once.....dunking folks and yelling "praise Dog"........

not sure what that was about........

Well, now you are getting alarmingly close to the Flying Unicycles and the Flaming Goats that I inadvertently revealed a hint about in an other thread.

Well, since I'm with Kamp Apokiliptika this year, you should expect something more Orwellian. Revealing Burning Man Secrets is doubleplusungood. Have you been practicing your New Speak?

Not exactly Up To The Minute Breaking News...but I wandered over to Nevada in Google Maps (as I often do) and was surprised to find an updated (from when, I cannot say) image of the playa with BIG floodlike flowy bits and zero evidence of the former city layouts. First time that I've been unable to spot ANY trace of town, so I can only postulate that there has been some serious water moving around. Will it be a hard, flat surface by August? Since I might not have a bike out there for the first time, Murphy says that All Signs Point To YES.

Fourth of Juplaya is generally our first opportunity for firsthand reports of playa condiditons, then they start coming in more often as DPW sets up and starts destroying the playa surface. We're months away from reliable evidentiary evidence.

Here's my goal for playa transportation if the surface sucks:
