wind

Post by thejabberwocky » Sun Apr 05, 2009 10:36 am

Hey everyone, I was wondering if anyone knows if there is a prominent wind direction out on the playa. I ask because I will be constructing something out there, and it would be better if it catches minimal wind.

Of course it reverses to the NE late night to mid-morning, though usually not as strong.

Unless of course one of those big whirligig thingies hit you, then I think it comes from all directions, simultaneously.

and, is not the wind directions in the "dust devils" counter clockwise?...........

so, that'd be the predominant wind direction..............since they move randomly around the playa, and, are the ones to be concerned with regarding damaging winds....IMHO......IIRC........

well there's not much I can do to about the dust devils. this thing is going to be pretty big though, with two long edges and two much shorter edges, so I just need to have the short edges pointing in the same direction as the predominant winds, otherwise it will act like a giant sail.

I have seen some savage wind come from the "opposite" direction as the usual prevailing wind, but almost never from any direction not parallel to the hills on each side. So your structure should be ok even if the wind shifts. Just be sure to REALLY tie it down. The ratcheting tie downs that we use to secure the load on the trailer get used again as wind insurance on our shade structure.

yup.. you kind of have to depend in coming from everywhere. in 07 we just got beaten by winds coming from the s.w. then we noticed all the flags around us died down.. that frickin wind came back and beat us again from the n.e. it was right after we said " well there is no more dust behind us so were all good". it was out own damn fault. :)
