Howdy Cowboy, welcome to eplaya! Just to let you know, you don't need to join a camp to go to burning man, but it can have its advantages. My group will be going up a few days early to set up our camp but we only have enough pre-entry spots for those already traveling with us. Maybe check out Stag Camp and see about hitching a ride with someone there. One way or another, we'll be looking forward to seeing you on the playa!

I went and bought a book on Burning Man....let the day dreaming begin!! If I had the time, means and know how, I would be one of those that put up a massive art piece.

This year, however, I will be doing good just to go. I have been eyeing this thing for over five years. Every year, I think about it and something comes up. This is my year!!

Any pointers, would be greatly appreciated.

1. Getting from Reno to the Man.
2. Getting water, food to the Man. (Am I stupid for thinking I can live on trail mix for a week?)

As far as costumes, tent etc. I think I have got that covered....well maybe just partially exposed!

That's the way to do it! Too many people think that they need some elaborate art car or whatnot to contribute and end up psyching themselves out of going. Just get the hell out there and figure it out from there.

If you don't want to drive, start getting into contact with the local Burner community (check out tribe.net) and you'll find a ton of groups that would be more than happy to have you!

Yes. Would you expect yourself to be able to thrive on nothing but trail mix in a normal environment? I wouldn't recommend bringing elaborate meals, but bring enough variety that you don't get malnourished. A great addition to the food/drink store is Gatorade powder (or any equivalent product), since you sweat a lot during the day. Last year we also made a ton of spaghetti sauce the night before our departure and feasted like kings with minimal cost and time. As for getting the stuff there, once you find people to get to the Burn with, the rest falls into place.

Good to have you here! I'll be living in Reno over the summer to work on our camp's art car, so we should meet up sometime! [Edit: Wait, you're in Kansas.]

Decided that I may want to drive...

Reasons:
1. I can make sure I have a cooler, gear, food, costumes, small art project, bike and a place to store them.
2. Not sure if car rentals let you go to burning man.
3. Would be able to offer a ride to a couple people for company along the drive.

Question:
1. What will my 2006 Durango be like when I am done? Will I ever get rid of the dust? Most cars in pictures are "junkers" or at least they look that way in pictures.
2. 24 hour drive or hooking up with other burners, which is easier?

reasons:
1. good call
2. they usually don't like hearing it's going there, and, will ding you if it's dirty when returned, but, I don't think they "disallow" it.
3. good call

Questions:
1. Minimally: dusty, inside and out. you may never get all the dust out.......some of us don't want to........
On the extreme, someone may decide to sleep naked on your hood and leave at least "prints", at worst, "rabbit tracks" thereon.
There are lots of nice cars and trucks there....you can go a long way to protect them, if you choose.

I borrowed my brothers Durango my first year.

Spent a couple of hours cleaning it before I returned it to him.

According to him there was still dust in it until he took out an elk with it a year and a half later.

That being said, I just bought a new truck and am planning to bring it out this year.

Do not open it unless you absolutely must, at least for dog's sake not during a dust storm! Cover over the vent/heater/defroster openings with blue painters tape. You can cover the stereo/hvac/dash etc with the same tape and plastic to further protect it. Take s spare air filter to swap out once you leave the playa. If it has an oil etc leak lay down tarp under the engine compartment and make sure you nail it down to the playa so it doesnt blow away. Worst case scenario? Your Dodge get's trashed. Best case scenario? You trade it in for a Ford after the burn

1. I was thinking I would just buy a case of wine, tuaca and beer etc, pack out the durango....BUT - it says no glass containers of any kind. Are they serious here? How am I to get my drink on?

if you bring glass, don't take it out of your camp...Bring a portable, lidded drinking vessel in addition to your portable water bottle, put carabiners on both, use the vessel for cocktails, coffee, whatever...stow used glass well - so it won't roll away in a duststorm, break against some rebar, and cripple a barefoot hippie...

Glass breaks and all too often leaves a mess for DPW to clean up. I don't know if they get on their hands and feet and use tweezers, but it's pretty damned close. Remember, leave no trace is a permit stipulation, not a greenwashing slogan.
