Burning man virgin...

Post by peachy » Mon Apr 13, 2009 12:41 pm

So this year will be my first and I´d like some advice from the veterans. Have you got a top ten tip list of things I should really be aware of before hand? If so gimmie gimmie!

Also I´m travelling alone to San Francisco first, (from the U.K) where/how can I meet up with other people who will be going?

Cheers!

First, welcome!

Here's my list:

1. Get and read the First Timer's Guide (http://www.burningman.com/first_timers/). Memorize it. While there are things you feel you might do better, for a first year I'd follow that pretty closely. If you come back, feel free to ad lib.

2. Hook up with a theme camp. There are tons and tons of them...many only meet out there at BM, so don't worry about it. But joining one will give you some much needed guidance and infrastructure so that you'll be free to explore.

3. Don't worry about gifting your first time. If you are adamant about gifting, gift your time and energy to some volunteer project. It will help out the whole group, and lighten the stuff that you need to bring.

4. Do NOT skimp on you water ration. If you don't want to wash, fine. But you need to be drinking a lot of water out there, especially if you are also drinking alcohol.

5. Leave No Trace is serious. You really need to plan on how you will take everything (including waste water) back out with you. A theme camp can help a LOT in this area.

6. Plan for good, light meals. You'll eat a lot less than you normally do. Still, DO plan to eat and not just drink your meals, mmmmkay?

7. Do spend a little on your personal survival items.. Have second and third backups for them. My personal items are: good sharp pocket knife, zip ties, parachute cord, hat, sunglasses, goggles (no vents) sunblock, comfy shoes (boots in my case) and dust mask. I put all this into a low profile camelback and carry with me at all times. Cheap shit in any of the above will only come back to haunt you. You're coming a long way to be miserable for a week...

8. Don't come early. This is by special arrangement for theme camps only. No, they won't just "let you in to setup."

9. Have fun!

To meet others, check the links to regionals in your area of the UK and in San Francisco here:
http://regionals.burningman.com/

Read the guides here:
http://www.burningman.com/first_timers/
http://www.burningman.com/preparation/

Be sure to look in the right menu on the Burning Man pages for more links to bikes, kitchens, securing your structure, and so on. Each of those links is worth its weight in photons.

List of links to how other people plan:

Good luck, have fun, and see you on the playa for years to come!
