1st Burning Man
1st Burning Man
Hello. This is my first Burning Man and I am so excited. I am very interested in the gifting and bartering. I am coming from Australia and would love advice on what kinda stuff to bring to barter and gift. Usually I would bake. I'm a baker but is this viable option..
Any suggestions would be appreciated...
Thank you and I will see you in the mix.

I like people who like people.
Don't bring anything to barter or gift your first year. Bartering really doesn't happen much and gifts often go ungifted or undesired because people are already overwhelmed by all the stuff they brought for themselves.
Baking is difficult because you have limited tools available. If you can come up with dishes you can make with only a camp stove or grill it would be a wonderful way to participate.

I think Dork said it all, but let me add to this for other first timers.
This is not a bartering event. You DO NOT have to exchange something of equal value should you need to ask a neighbor for something. Conversely, if you can help out someone with assistance or an item that they might need, please do so without expecting anything in return.
If you bring a box of trinkets to give out for your first year, you will probably find that it's inappropriate and will probably end up bring most of it home.
Here is a short list of things that I bring each year to gift, that some people may find useful.
Chapstick lip balm
sun block spray cans
foot lotion
bike locks for those who forgot
small flashlights to pass out around the porta potties at midnight
light-up medallion necklaces for darkwads
Sharpie markers to spread around the Temple of Rememberance
extra dust masks and bandanas
Again, these are mostly things I share with people in need. Your first year, bring your open mind, your willingness to help, participate and share.

I like to bring a few nice things to gift folks who make my burn extra special. I usually try to gift useful things as opposed to cheap crap from China.
A few examples of store bought..
Packs of WetWipes
Zippo Lighters
CRKT Knives
Kershaw Knives
Sure Fire Flashlights
Innova Flashlights
This year I made some things to give to the masses..
Bandannas (custom super secret die job)
Homemade Soda can camp stoves (hand engraved and painted)
Mint tins for cig butts (engraved and painted)
CNC machined Silver dimes (with a small hole for wearing as a necklace)
Brownies (my own recipe)

i'm consistent. like McDonalds. He'll be mean to you no matter what because he's mean to everyone!
it's nice to have something you can count on, and be certain of.
that would be me, spewing vicious non-sequitars, at the top of my lungs every morning while you fucks are just trying to get to sleep.

I'm still not sure whether I really want to meet you on the playa or whether I want to avoid you at all cost.Simon of the Playa wrote:i'm consistent. like McDonalds. He'll be mean to you no matter what because he's mean to everyone!

I'm guessing the latter would be the wiser course of action.
